You know, I actually believe the guy about the lake incident. But it doesn't matter now. What a maroon.

Only tangentially NFL related, but I love Peter King's mentions of NHL in his MMQB column ( link).
Quote:
10. I think these are my non-football thoughts of the week:
a. Ryan Malone, I haven't seen a tougher man in sports in 2008 than you. For those who missed the electrifying Stanley Cup final series -- you won't see sports as intense as that series anywhere, and I mean anywhere -- you missed Malone, the rugged Pittsburgh Penguin, taking a 105-mph slap shot from Pittsburgh defenseman Hall Gill just below the right eye in Game 5.
It smashed his nose (breaking it for the second time in this series) and left the area below the eye socket discolored. He missed a couple of shifts ... then was back out on the ice and never missed any more time in the last two games. I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone as tough.
I wonder how Malone feels right now. He's got to still have the worst headache you can have, even six days later. I can't imagine any sport has tougher guys than hockey. Maybe rugby. But the way the players on both of those teams pounded each other mercilessly for six games showed me how much they love this game and wanted this Stanley Cup. It was refreshing to see.
b. How great is Zetterberg?
c. Congratulations, Mike O'Hara. I know how much you love your Wings.
d. I hope Chad Johnson watched the Stanley Cup finals.

Peter is a partner on seasons ticket for the Devils.

Johnathon Ogden announcing his retirement today.

Heck of a player. Watching him play against the Chiefs two seasons ago. He made Jared Allen look completely useless. One would think that he will be a first ballet HOFer.

The 49ers released undrafted free agent Ezra Butler.
That's not really news, but:
Quote:
Butler was driving his 2008 Hummer H3 when he allegedly failed to move over to the left lane while passing another motorist pulled over by a state trooper Saturday night.
According to an NHP report, the trooper then stopped Butler and reported smelling marijuana.
"The driver stated he smoked marijuana 40 minutes ago," the trooper wrote in the report. "I gave the driver field sobriety tests. He showed signs of intoxication. I advised the driver he was under arrest and took him into custody."
|
Maybe it is family money, but where does an undrafted free agent get the money for a Hummer H3?

Signing bonus can be a nice down payment....heck maybe even cover the whole thing.
But he'll have nothing else.

NFL gives HOF tours for all incoming (rookie) players.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/column...mes&id=3443225
I heard Micheal Irvan saying this would be great idea on the NFL Network after he was enshrined last year. He told the Commish and the rest is history I guess.

Jevon Walker (WR - Raiders) found unconscious in Las Vegas and has "significant injuries". Police think he was a victim of a robbery.

DFF is going to have a good laugh at this I'm sure. Walker is going to do a whole lot of nothing this year. And will probably miss a few games, depending on the severity of the orbital bone injury.

J.J. Arrington was arrested after a fight
Quote:
The 25-year-old Arrington was charged with disorderly conduct.
Nash County sheriff's Sgt. T.R. Lamm said a magistrate later ordered Arrington held for 24 hours for contempt of court.
|

I could see him arguing that he had to protect himself, but the fact that he is also charged with contempt leads me to wonder if he will be getting a short suspension from the league.

It seems like the only newsworthy stuff in the NFL right now are robberies, DUI's and deaths. Brutal.

Well, let' throw another log on that fire:
Quote:
Tennessee Titans defensive end Jevon Kearse has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop near the Vanderbilt University campus.
|
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html
But if you want a more upbeat story, here is one that should have been heard about more:
Quote:
Ex-New York Giants lineman George Martin went through 24 pairs of shoes and lost 40 pounds before finishing his cross-country walk Saturday, raising $2 million along the way for sick 9/11 rescue workers.
The co-captain of the 1987 Super Bowl champions said he considered it a privilege to walk on behalf of the 9/11 first responders. He called them far more heroic than any professional athlete.
|
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....ap/index.html
Here is a link from Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback where he wrote about Martin's walk when Martin crossed the 1/3 point. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...k15/index.html
You only ever hear about the bad things players do, and probably because it means there may be a suspension or fine coming. It would be nice if there was some way to reward the players doing good works. Not that they do it for the reward, but it would be good to offset all the scandal in sports (and this is true of all sports)

Here is a good read on the role alcohol plays in the NFL. (Biased opionin of course since the article is based on Jared Allen)

Good article. Kind of what I expected, NFL player at a bar doesn't need to pay for anything because someone always wants to buy them a drink.

Not to mention the peer pressure or the wanting to fit in with your teammates. Plus you have to admit, a night out drinking on the town with your buddys is actually pretty fun. With the exception of the hangover.
