Don't ever do that again. If you do then Vancouver is your new team to cheer for.
Get an attorney if you weren't impaired, Work a deal out if you were impaired and don't make things worse by clogging up the courts fighting over something you did wrong.

Ugh. With everything i've been through in the past I can't believe people would still have the audacity to drink and drive. I was told if I don't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all so I won't go off on you.

I will say though(taken from the Global Ad years back)........"if you drink and drive, you're a bloody idiot."

EDIT: I just read Flashpoint's post and I pretty much agree with what he has to say. I'm in the same boat and to say I hate drunk drivers is an understatement, that's for sure. I could care less what happened to drunk drivers, it's what happens to the innocent drivers who are on the same road that I care about.

I don't understand why people are willing to let drunk drivers off easy.

Res got damn lucky that he didn't kill someone else. For too many innocent victims are killed because of some fool who thinks drinking and driving is ok.

With all the repeat offenders out there, these DUI drivers don't seem to be getting the message.

DUI laws aren't tough enough.

I'm kinda curious how many people on the road are impaired. You can go to any pub any night of the week and see guys hammer back 3 or 4 pints, then jump behind the wheel and drive off....

It is quite scary, really. Drinking and driving occurs way more than a person would like to think. I don't think that enough steps are taken to stop it.

I seem to remember a study published by the Herald about 10 years ago in which they found that on average a driver will drive drunk between 800 and 1050 times before being caught for the first time. I can't believe that's accurate (it would amount to driving drunk every day for 3 years) but the article sticks out in my memory. Whatever the true figure is, I'd wager it's very high. That suggests both that drinking and driving is much more common than we're led to believe, and also that it may not be as dangerous as we're led to believe. Mind you, it's still damned stupid.

Hmmm.

A better transit system maybe? I would really like to know what I can drink and still blow under. The few times I have been through a checkstop they haven't even stopped me so I can't get a gauge on what I can drink/hr to drive legally.

I am not excusing what I did but there is a difference between someone driving home that might blow a .085 and isn't actually impaired and someone who climbs behind the wheel of a cement truck at 3 or 4 times the legal limit and kills an entire family.

I have notice a huge difference of opinion on this subject for people who grew up in rural vs urban areas as well.

I don't buy that, the laws in place now can really affect the offender for many years. Criminal record (which alone can burden someone for over four years), a year ban from driving (not to mention huge hikes in insurance rates if you can even find a company to insure you), huge fines, legal fees, and that's all on the first offense, second offenses can carry jail time...

I don't think it's the penalty that is the problem but...

There's the ticket. Here's a thread I posted showing holiday drunk driving statistics... not enough is being done to catch offenders to act as a deterent.

Ya, no kidding. A little perspective and reality is needed. Maybe we should shoot anybody that even so much as gets a traffic ticket because they're clearly morally and socially defective and who knows what they might do next.

I see where your coming from and in most respects i agree. Still we have people being charged with the same offence years later. It's those drivers that had me thinking that penalties weren't enough.

My best friend is an only child because her sister was killed at the age of 16 by a drunk driver.

I have physical problems with my back that I will have for the rest of my life from being in a car accident caused by drunk drivers TWICE, 30 days apart, which totalled both vehicles. The second guy added high levels of cocaine before hitting me, two other cars and 3 students crossing a crosswalk in the afternoon heading home from school, where he ran a red light. In all, he sent 9 people to the hospital and is damn lucky nobody was killed. He was arrested for the NINTH time for drunk driving, he was driving on a suspended license in violation of his probation because he had just gotten out of prison three months earlier from his last drunk driving conviction. He was setenced to three years in prison, which was never actually served because he spent 18 months in county jail awaiting trial, which his lawyer kept postponing, so he got credit for time served and was a free man.

I can't have sympathy for people who are selfish and wreckless. If you get behind the wheel of a car after drinking, that's exactly what you are. I hope the OP really learns a lesson and appreciates how lucky he is that nobody was killed. Its a stupid mistake to make and it should never happen again.
