Facebook has gone down the tubes. I remember when it was exclusive to post-secondary students, and that's it. That was cool.
Ever since they 'MySpaced' it by letting anyone join, and unleashed the hordes of third-party apps on it, it plummeted into suck-tastic status. 95% of it just seems like complete spam now.
I pretty much just use Facebook as a tool now to mock life and other people who take that site seriously by putting weird information in my profile and pics that make people scratch their head. It's WAY more fun this way, it goes against the norm.
Like someone else said, I pretty much check it to see what my friends outside the country are doing, and that's pretty much it.
Oh, and statuses... when I see a status as '___ is at work' or '___ is taking their kid to the mall', I laugh. I wonder if these people think that others actually give a flying crap about their daily musings, especially ######edly unoriginal ones like that. It's way more fun to put a status as something like'___ just got out of a federal penitentary on parole and is now living in your neighbourhood.' That's alot more interesting.

Couldn't agree more, I got rid of my facebook for awhile but then realized I wanted to keep all those photo albums up for my distant friends and family. So I just got rid of my wall, and 6/7 of my friends list (aka people who added me who I never talk to).
Everything besides the ability to share photos drives me crazy about facebook.

The allure of getting the inside scoop on your friends and all the happenings has died thanks to FB.
A 10-year high school reunion or University Alumni party is going to be pretty stale, considering you know everything about everybody. I just can't see myself getting excited about anybody I know anymore; the mystery is gone.

Hahaha exactly. I just joined it in the fall due to constantly being harassed to do so. I thought it was cool for about two weeks, but now its just lameski. I love the people who update stuff like "____ is studying for a test tomorrow ", or "is going over to Steve's later". Wow that's dynamite, thanks for the update of every single tedious event in your life. I finally called it quits when within a couple hours I was "Bought an E-drink", "Was bitten by a werewolf and must now bite others", and asked to join the "PB&J Club". What am I, 8 years old?? COME ON!!!

Anyone who sends me junk like that gets off the friends list. I've noticed that it only seems to be a few select repeat offenders.
still being in post-secondary i find it useful for social functions, keeping tabs and sending messages since it's rare I have everyone's email handy and/or i know which one of the 17 they check. Plus facebook mobile is a good bridge for texting/messaging.

A few years is pretty optimistic. Just looking at the badmouthing facebook is getting in this thread tells us that is already on the outs.
No offense to CPers, but I doubt (m)any of us are what they call "early adopters". If this hockeynerd crowd is already turned off then the trendsetters have been onto something else for months.
On top of that, facebook was featured on 60 Minutes a few weeks ago. If that stodgy old show is "hip" to it then it is definitely starting to circle the drain.

I love facebook. It is so much better than myspace in how intuitive and organized it is. The applications are a minor inconvenience. I don't see what the big deal is.

As a member of the main demographic of facebook (college students) I can tell you facebook is more popular than ever. Everyone is on it and on it all the time. Definitely not out-of-date in any way, shape, or form.

Agreed, I'm in college too and in the UofA library on my spares I see people on it all the time. Doesn't change the fact I think it's junk though, and I notice quite a few people I talk to are saying similar things. Way too many kiddy applications, it almost feels geared to grade school kids, as opposed to college students. To each their own I guess...

That may be optimistic you are right, the life span for these things isnt very much.
They are basically killing it themselves to drive up its worth, they seem to forget that its worth comes from the users and the traffic....
in the end the people will have the power
anyways that 1.5 billion is completely overvalued and insane..

People like to complain, even when they like the product. Everyone I know loves facebook, even if they don't admit it. If they hate it so much, why are they checking it 20 times a day?

If it's not out-of-date yet it is racing towards past-due at a pretty good clip.
It's a cliche but it is true -- when the mainstream latches on to a trend, and the mainstream has definitely latched onto facebook, the trend has peaked and the cool kids are already on to something else, and where the cool kids go...
On a related note, in a trailer for the Iron Man movie Tony Stark said something like "I don't want to see this photo on your myspace page" and it seemed dated already. That line is cut out from the trailer on the official site now.

Myspace is out-of-date now because facebook is replaced it. I don't see facebook and myspace being trends so much as filling a need. Facebook fills the need of communication website better than anyone, they will only go out of style when eclipsed by another site in user friendliness and easy communication between friends.

And not so long from now you'll be able to say "facebook is out of date now because ___________ replaced it".
I'm not badmouthing it or saying it sucks (I have a facebook account too), this is just how it goes.
Something will replace facebook and it has either in beta-testing or already been launched. We just haven't heard of it yet.

I rather like Facebook, although I tend to ignore the vampire bites and other random swashbuckling that I get invited into. I enjoy having an open platform with which to interact with my friends. Especially the ability/ease of sharing pictures, setting up social functions, keeping in better touch with those out-of-towners, and the scrabulous app. So long as you don't allow every two bit mental patient to become your friend it's no more annoying than ICQ used to be.
But if I owned a 1.5 billion stake in the website I'd be selling. Buy my own private island and have someone else deal with the 'friends' who want me to become a vampire/zombie/pirate.

Once Google and other online mega-giants like Amazon and eBay start integrating their respective services onto Facebook, it will become the new one-stop-shop for all your needs. A social network site, combined with online shopping, business tools, and powerful search capabilities is the next step I think this phenomenon must take in order to stay alive.
Facebook has to evolve into your all-encompassing website to survive past another internet fad. Myspace failed to do so.

It is true that everyone not only has face book and checks it religiously, but everyone o know hates the addiction that it is. Deep down its like smoking, easy to start, seems like such a good thing, but when you try and shake it, it pulls you back in. I seriously don't know a single person who actually "likes" facebook and i have over 200 friends on it, for that reason alone, it is doomed to fail.

It's too bad it's like that, too. At one time, there were only select people who could use it (post-secondary students); and it wasn't full of spam-tastic applications. It was just basic user info, pictures and communication. That's it. That's what made it popular in the first place.
That was a much better format because it was just raw, and it was just personal - only people that you had as other post-secondary friends could see it. Nothing fancy, just a neat little idea. Granted, other people had to use it to make it effective, and I guess that's what happened.
The apps are the worst part of Facebook now; except for one - LOLCats. That's the only one that I have, and it's always moar den worf it k thnx bai.
