but it can go 185 miles per hour. Crazy. But that V10 engine is what sold the car. You can buy any old sedan for a fraction of the price of one of these things, but they won't keep up with a Ferrari, and even though most people know they'll never come close to topping out their car, they do like to know that it's possible. And they like their friends and everyone they drive past to know it's possible too.
I disagree. If you want to show off, you can buy a much flashier car for $100,000. You buy this car because you like performance without advertising it.

Really?

Audi RS6:

580 HP bi-turbo V10, and lots of room for groceries in the back.

Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG:

Bi-Turbo V12, 604HP.

Yeah you can buy a flashier car, but anyone driving an M5 has a circle of friends who know exactly what it is and he's showing off to them. He's also showing off to the other rich guys on the road.

Snobbery, exclusivity and performance are what these cars are marketed with and that's why people buy them. It's a more subtle form of showing off than driving a canary yellow Corvette, but it's still showing off.

This M5 has nothing on the S65 by the way. You could get two M5's and an Excursion for your wife to drive for the price of one of them. And I don't think that's an S65 in the picture actually.

I disagree... sort of. There are lots of people that do as you say, but I myself love the fact that my car looks completely subtle (more so than an M5) and people who only know a moderate amount about cars don't have any clue that it's not just a regular sedan. When I'm on the highway by myself however, I'm all grins. I got it for me, and not to impress anyone else.

You are right though, that there are many people out there who will drop what kind of car they drive and how much power it has within 5 minutes of meeting them, which is really lame.

And yes that is an S65, but it's an '05. I picked that year because the styling is way more subtle than the face lifted ones which have a more aggressive bumper. It's a total sleeper, and pretty awesome. Not much to distinguish it from the versions that cost less than half as much.

Exactly, before my friends dad bought his M5 he took a racecar driving seminar, so he would be able to get the control and experience to drive the high performance sportscar.
