not my proposal to my wife but I went to visit her while she was teaching in Korea for a year and actually wrote her a completely illustrated fairy tail about our time together thus far.
should have saved it for my proposal, instead I opted for a nice home made meal (filet mignon) and some flowers. It was quite funny because she was so taken back with the nice supper and everything else that I actually had to push her back from hugging me so I could complete the task and get down on one knee to propose

I think our engagement was a bit memorable. After a nice supper, we went back to his place and my hubby says "Oh, let's have Kinder surprises for dessert" (You know those eggs with toys in them??). I end up on the computer for a while and he's getting a bit whiny, going "when are we going to have Kinder surprises?" - so I'm going "oookaaayyyyy". He throws me one, and he takes one - I open it to find a ring in the egg. I thought the ring was fake. So I'm trying to figure out if he's joking or not (and trying not to get my hopes up) so I give him a kiss and said "Thank you?" Yup, I said "thank you" to a marriage proposal. Anyhoo, he finally said "Will you marry me" and well.. we've been married for almost 2 1/2 years now. But man, that was damn funny.

I took her on a walk through the Mississippi Palisades state park, and asked her on a point overlooking a large part of the Mississippi River valley where I'd laid out a bottle of champagne and glasses on the stone ledge.
We split up and I sold the ring for about 7% of what I paid for it to be rid of the damned thing, so you might not want to go that route.

I took my girlfriend to San Francisco, toured the city and proposed under the dome at the palace of fine arts. That was 2003 and we still haven't set a date yet and I don't think we plan to. I'm trying for the longest engagement ever. Has anyone gone longer than 4.5years?

I heard Steve Young the former QB went mountain climbing and at the top of the mountain proposed by saying something like "this is as high as I can can go alone, would you help take me higher"
Sappy, but all the girls I know would love that (and having his $$$)

What great timing for this topic - I need help on strategy for the ring (particularly from the ladies of CP). We are off on a trip to Syria and Jordan which would seem to make for a memorable place to pop the question.
However, I'm not even comfortable bringing an $300 iPod along to such places, let along a ring of substantial value. I know insurance covers these things but why take the risk? I asked if the jeweller could make a "fake" ring with non precious materials but they said the labor would make it really expensive (the real ring has an intricate design)
Should I?
- Get a simplified "fake" version of the ring?
- Don't propose overseas and wait to do it locally?
- Propose with the real ring in Syria and Jordan?
Thanks - time is ticking before we go on vacation. I'm sure some of you have proposed overseas and I'd love to hear what you did.
Did anyone do the "ask the father thing"? Her dad died some years ago, so not sure if I should default to her mom or brother? I'm leaning to skipping this all together.

this isn't a proposal but for Valentines one year I approached my g/f's chem 2xx prof (it was about a 200-300 person class) and asked if i emailed him a slide if he would put it at the end of his lecture notes in powerpoint. sure enough with about 2 minutes to go in class the prof called out her name had her stand and then presented the slide which was pink had cupids and said "will you be my valentine?".
it was met with ooohs from the girls and groans from the guys. she really liked it.
just try and think of something semi original and that should do the trick.

When that day comes, the only thing that matters to me is that she doesn't suspect a thing. A lot of people go overboard and half way through I'm sure she's thinking it. Where's the fun in that?

I wouldn't take the real thing, use a prop. Too many bad things can happen taking something of high value on holiday.
I proposed to my wife on a bridge in Venice, didn't take a real ring. Didn't take a ring at all, just asked her. Gave her the ring when we got back.

A few things...
I think men make more of this than should be. As long as it's romantic, it doesn't have to be on a trip to Syria, it could be a bed covered in rose petals with the ring on a single long stem rose in the pillows... Whatever. I think closer to home where it means more is the key. Whatever it is the two of you do.
As for the ask the father thing... I mean, if I'm going to say yes anyway, it's not necessary. But it's such a gallant gesture. If you're friendly with the brother, ask him. Tell him you'll treat her right, make him an uncle and join the family. If you want an easier route (what guy really wants to think of his sister as having sex? Or what dad for that matter?) ask her mom. Her mom will be happy she's found a guy thoughtful enough to do that.
My 2c.
