I think times have changed considerably, no matter if a blue collar job or white collar job. There is a much greater emphasis on drinking responsibly. Under 21, over 21, this type of excessive drinking is not a good scene today.

A good general rule of thumb for an office party is make sure there are at least two other people that are drunker than you are

Yup. And if you feel yourself moving up the standings, start spiking other folks' drinks.

Ah the old E-in-the-beer gag. Never gets old.

Well, until somebody dies I guess.

This is a normal thing when you work in the oil and gas industry, except they don't need a christmas party just an everyday Friday or even a tuesday..

My buddy works for Apache and i have never seen anyone get so drunk in front of his bosses. But they are all so loser pissed so it isn't really the biggest thing..

My advice is to get your boss loser pissed next year just so that he is now the new office drunk..

also try to sleep with one of the hot girls at your work,

So getting drunk at a staff party is the cool thing to do?

No but the thread isn't about responsibility or being 'cool'... the guy asked about an ambulance bill. Let him make his own choices. If anyone needs help, Calgary Puck should be pretty low on the list of places to get it.

Party on.

When I was in high school, I had a part time job at a grocery store that had an annual Christmas party. The first few years were open bar and I certainly took advantage of that.

The year before I went to my first one, they didn't even bother to check ID. But unfortunately, some underage girl got too hammered so the following year, my first, they were checking ID.

Anyways, they were checking ID and then stamping people's hands who were of age. Since I was only 17 at the time and without fake ID, I had to improvise. Since I had a membership at the gym downstairs, I went down and asked used their red stamp on my hand, smudged it and then upstairs claimed the stamp got smeared when I washed my hands.

So it was a good time that night until the excessive alcohol consumption caught up with me and I had to rest my head at one of the tables. At this point one of the waiters busted my faux stamp and ratted me out to the store's owner. However, since he knew my old man he knew there would be no parental complaints from my family so all was good. Since most of the people there were either students who appreciated maximum alcohol consumption or grocery store lifers who were accustomed to liquor-augmented nights, the matter was never a big deal to anyone.

A few years later new ownership took over the store and the open bar was no more unfortunately.

So, we know of at least two places where the Paramedics were called to an office party on Friday night.

What if your boss's wife is competing in the Miss Nude Calgary Pageant? What are the rules there (besides high-fiving the boss)?

The rules on nudie judging are pretty clear on this. It's a conflict of interest and you must resign your post. However, you do get a free shot at the secretary next Monday.

I've had bosses in the past who have more or less forced me to get ridiculously hammered at office parties. In fact, people who did not get hammered were looked down upon. In some cases getting hammered w/ the boss is a great way to be on his good side.

It's about responsibility wether you like it or not. Instead of high fiving his boss the next day he should be thanking his stars that his fellow workmates cared enough to call EMS. It's not something to joke about.

We got rear-ended earlier this summer. It wasn't a high impact collission and damage was minimal, but we still called for an ambulance because we had our then-three month old daughter with us. They checked her out on the scene and found nothing wrong. We refused further treatment and didn't take them up on their offer for a ride to the hospital.

Few weeks later we were billed for the service.

Ah....the days of rampant alcholism....how I miss thee.....

I look at it this way, when I was younger (15-Present) at the staff parties I would be hammered!! Just swinging for the fences drunk.

It would usually result in me doing crazy and stupid things which would literally make me headline news around work until the next event.

One place I used to work paid well, but plain sucked to work at. Nobody got along with each other, and when the first staff party of my tenure was held almost nobody went. Only 10 people + Me.

I got there. I was bored. I was 17 and had a whole empty store and a table of free booze at my disposal. So I started power-drinking. I mean throwing it back with authority, and some of my co-workers gave it a good attempt to keep up with me, so in the end we were all in a well medicated state.

I then initiated a store-wide game of Tag-Team shopping cart tag/hide-and-go-seek/Dodge-product. Big department store, 5 teams of 2 people with shopping carts, beer and the nearest handy product to toss at one another with maximum maliciousness. It was epic.

Working there got better the very next day. It was like a crazy team bonding experience and it seemed like it just took one person to break the ice. I worked there for 2 years and every staff event was attended by almost the whole workforce every single time after that because who knows what going to happen? After a while, I didnt even have to do anything. Everyone's creativity was let loose and people started worrying less about the next day at work, and more about having fun, which is the point right? I'm still a legend around there.

Needless to say, I believe in that, but you have to represent it appropriately. I have tons of stories like that one. The big thing is, it wasnt my career, it was just a job that was paying for my school/car/beer/food/GF. Who cares? You step out of line and get fired or something pops up that you hate, you move on and get another job. No big.

If its your career, different spin. Still go out and have fun, but dont be fornicating with your boss' wife on his desk. Thats bad. Dont burn the place down either, that is frowned upon.

One of my last job offers came from a University information session. All the well-dressed prim and proper business students went and got a juicebox and a bowl of salad. Gotta look good and be respectful right? I didnt even want that job and I went semi-casual and took a beer and a burger.

What happened?

I ended up talking to the senior partner all night complaining about how we both hate info sessions. Nobody ever loosens up and is just themselves. Noone ever grabs a beer and just chats honestly about hockey and that stupid move that CEO in the papers made and did I want a job.

This post has gone all to hell. I apologize. I guess my point is dont drink and post. Everybody loses.

Couldn't agree with you more. I have been convinced for some time that the best work bonding experience is getting hammered together.

Maybe you should write a book on how to win over the boss
