WTF? I'm imagining a drunk guy slumped over in a chair, passed out. How does that warrant calling the paramedics? Any party (staff parties included) that I've been to that had drunk guys passed out, never were paramedics called. Only things called upon were black markers and white out. Sometimes pretzels were involved.

It is an office party hosted by the company and they do have to protect themselves and their staff.

We don't know what "passed out" means in this case, because even the person involved wasn't there.

I'm betting that they checked on him and he was completely un-responsive or he fell over on the floor so of course an ambulance is called. the last thing that they want to do is pour him into a cab or drive him home only to find out that the person died that night from alcohol poisoning.

I've never understood the desire to go to an office party and play the part of the incredible drunk guy, and drinking to the point of passing out. To some extent an office party is still a professional environment, and your partying with your bosses and your co-workers. And living up to the reputation of the company drunk, is not a good thing. Passing out to the point where an ambulance is called, and you've probably ruined the good times that others are having is a bad thing.

There are lots of places in the world to get stupid drunk, vomit and pass out. Most people have done it at one time or another, including all the "dads" in this thread. It's your time and your money. Knock yourself out.

However, esthetic-wise and career-wise, the office party is probably the last place in the world you should do that. Very dumb.

to be honest, I'm expecting someone to have a chat with Kanuck on his first day back at work. Getting drunk and passing out at a party to the point of needing emergency treatment is going to be a huge source of concern. The fact that Kanuck feels that he has a drunken rep to live up to means that he's been smashed in front of co-workers before.

It might not cost him his job, but I'm certain that he's going to be watched.

Most places your right, but some small and/or some blue collar companies may not make a big deal about it.

Your right, I am making assumptions, but over the last few years, with the companies that I've dealt with, two of the key issues are health and wellness strategies, and substance abuse rights.

While it may be fine now, it's almost guaranteed to backfire one day. Remember that!

I make a mess of myself from time to time, sometimes to the point of being totally loser pissed. That said I've never passed out since I was 13 and won't do that again. And work is a bad bad place to do that at! Whether it's accepted/funny or whatever, just... yeah.. bad idea.

I guess call me a dad too. I've done some hard core drinking in my life, and still do on occasion. But I've never considered a politically charged situation like an office party as an appropriate venue for getting twisted. A beach in the caribbean, or while judging the Miss Nude Calgary Pageant, those are appropriate occasions for power drinking. In front of the boss's wife? Not so much.

Depends where you work. I remember when I was younger my mom worked in a sales office and during Christmas and Stampede everyone would just get DESTROYED! I remember going with my dad to go pick up my mom from her work party one night and her boss looked like he was out for the count. I agree with you that overall yes, its really not a smart idea at all. But it really depends where you work. Either way its not good that he got so bad that the paramedics had to be called, but some offices(like where my mom worked, where it would probably just become a big joke for years) may be more lenient than others.

That's very true. I worked at a steel mill for a few years. If you didn't get totally blotto at one of their parties people figured you were a wimp, at best.
