My cat gets to go out on the balcony, which, as it is 19 floors up, is effectively like being inside except without walls. In my old place, I'd take him outside and sit with him, never letting him get out of my sight or leave the yard.
If you love your cat, don't let it go outside on its own. If you respect your neighbours, same thing. If you're not big on either, next time get a fish.

Actually, it is quite funny. Don't be such a party pooper. No one is going to build a catapult and start flinging stray animals into the air. Sheesh.

What pisses me off is we have two dogs. We're responsible enough to have your backyard completely blocked off so that when they're out, they stay on our property. Now, the neighbour's cats are, of course, allowed to run free, and especially like hanging around our fence. Well obviously this drives the dogs absolutely insane and they start barking like someone's going to kill them. They wont even shut it if we wrestle them inside. But here's the rich part. It's then that we get fined because a loving neighbour of ours complained to the city about the barking

Your real name wouldn't happen to be Dwight Schrute would it?
You obviously haven't found any corpses of domestic cats after a coyote has made short work of it, moldering sightless flat on its back with its guts gone.

You'd be quite surprised what some people can do to animals. Someone once thought it would be "funny" to drop a cat off the overpass into traffic by my house.

Why not? Cats roam into my yard repeatedly and s***/p*** everywhere, I have no issue fixing the problem permanently. People need to be more responsible and stop using the excuse that "cats like to roam" to cover up their lack of responsibility.
I have several humane traps, which I use to relocate the cats, far far away from my neighborhood.

No it's not and no I haven't. I just have no use for roaming cats. I have to keep my dogs in my yard and yet all these useless cat owners let their cats roam. Unfortunately the coyotes won't eat the owners that don't deserve these cats.

Ooohhh how tragic that you have some cat doodie on your lawn. Your woes clearly know no end. And especially considering that it's happening to you of all people in the world! How could anyone be so inconsiderate to you? Those two square inches of your lawn are clearly so much more important than a child's pet. You are absolutely right to steal people's animals and truck them into distant parts of the city to die of starvation or euthanasia when they are taken to the SPCA.
Grow up and stop acting like a Canucks fan.

Excuse me if my levels of sympathy for animal cruelty jokes are low. I've been volunteering as a dog walker at the Calgary Humane Society for a while and even at that low level you get to see and/or hear about some pretty disgusting acts.
That little catapult joke might seem funny to you, perhaps because you think that no one would actually do it, but trust me - people do things like that and worse to trusting animals everyday.

Maybe he doesn't want his CHILD playing in cat crap. Take the roaming cats to the SPCA if these cat owners really want there cat they will pay to get them back. I don't let my dog roam free so why should it be any different for a cat owner

if these children truly cared about their pets they wouldn't let them roam. My Grandfather used to keep a pellet gun at his front door and whenever the cats would come roaming he would start shooting. My Grandfather was very of squirrels and the cats were eating them all. The city wouldn't do anything so he took it in his own hands. Roaming cats are useless animals unless you live on a farm.

Man's inhumanity to others and animals never surprises me. People are depraved and self-serving. That is why it is up to their parents and society to teach them appropriate boundaries and how to understand the concept of context. Humor is about pushing boundaries and the absurdity of "what if this happened?" It is not the responsibility of the joke teller if a person takes a thought they heard in a joke and uses it for the basis of an horrific act any more than it was Ozzy Osbourne's fault that some teenagers killed themselves after hearing "Suicide Solution."

How can you possibly think that this is even close to an appropriate or reasonable solution?
PS: Your grandfather was very of squirrels? and the cats were eating them all? Am I to think that the cats were eating the squirrels here? Please edit.

Seems pretty clear to me. The missing word was obviously something like "fond."
Different people have different preferences in how they interact with animals. Just because your favourite animal may be cats, it doesn't mean that your enjoyment of cats should limit somebody else's enjoyment of other animals.

Cats don't eat squirrels. I have never in my life seen a pet cat eat a squirrel. Squirrels are too fast, too big, and have teeth and claws.
I'm sorry but I find that just very hard to believe.
And there's a lot of irony in killing one animal because you don't like that it's killing another, regardless of whether cats eat squirrels or not.
And I'm not saying that because I like cats other people have to- I am saying that killing someone else's cat, even if they are on your property, is cruel and unneccesary.
And just as a response to some previous posts- what is the point of a humane trap if you "relocate" the cat to where it's owners have no hope of ever finding it, and it will likely die of disease or starvation?
I don't even own a cat- I'm just defending the principle.
I don't like kids but I don't formulate complex plots to trap them should they come into my yard.
I just think we all ought to be worrying about one of the many bigger problems in the world- cats in one's yard seems so silly to get so angry over.

While that may be true of most cats, there are certainly some cats that are more than capable of killing, and eating, squirrels. When I was a kid I had a cat that killed weasels, ducks, partridges and gophers. I'm sure a squirrel would have been no problem for her. However, a cat killing a squirrel is simply a part of the natural order, and getting mad at them and killing them over it is stupid. Might as well blow up the sun because it shines. As with most matters pet related, the fault lies with the irresponsible owners who allowed their cats to roam and have the freedom to kill squirrels. The fellow's grandfather would have been on firmer moral ground for using his pellet gun on the cat's owners rather than the squirrel-hunting cat itself. Of course he would have been on shakier legal grounds had he done this, so it's the cat that pays the price.

Just one more side note that I think is worth putting out there:
Pets tend not to have a "use". We keep them because they provide us with company and affection and so on.
Lots of things in the world that bring us joy don't have a "use".
