Well, no. I think what Phillips is showing now is great, and this us precisely what he needed to do. But he did not have a great camp—certainly not good enough to have kept him on the main roster from the start. I would say he looks to be earning a shot now, but that was not the case a month ago.

Not so sure that is true. He's battled injury plagued seasons frequently in the past, and it may be that last year was an aberration in the sense that he avoided anything major until the playoffs.

Definitely concerned that he's got something significant that may hamper him all season at this point.

Has there been any indication about what Tanev's injury is?

Not sure I agree.

He was the best player on the ice for them in that game against Seattle, especially in the third period when they were pushing for a goal.

Not sure he would have done enough to make the team, but he did do enough to get a look with the actual roster IMO.

He's certainly went down and had a start to the season that deserves a look though. Unfortunately the injuries on defense actually make it harder to call him up.

That’s good to hear! Was worried that it might be related to that, which might potentially mean a long time out of the lineup.

Good that he is on the trip as well.

Who knows, Phillips could secretly be another Johnny type player. Come on Darryl, give him a shot!

or kylington if he isn't coming back for a while

I really want to see him up here tried in a middle six role .. maybe even a peek in toffoli's spot .. but I know that's a lot to ask for with this team

Probably should expect a trade pretty soon regardless if all 6 are healthy. Sucks for Kylington. He would be logging huge minutes.

So who is responsible for the continued development of the players? Coaches? The players themselves? Something isn't right.

It shouldn't be surprising that the Flames are lacking defensive depth organizationally.

They had a huge 2015 draft getting Anderson and Kylington and Magiapane with 3 of their 5 picks. Then after that draft they took 3 defensemen in 4 years (24 picks in those 4 years).

Fox, who wouldn't sign here and thus was traded. Valimaki, who's development stalled and was lost on waivers, and a 7th round shot in the dark that ended up playing most of his time in the ECHL before going to the KHL.

The team just didn't invest enough into defense for a 4 year span and we are seeing that now. They also haven't had enough hits from their forward group with all the forwards they had taken in those 4 years.

We're down Tanev, Kylington, Stone and essentially Valimaki......How are people calling out our defensive depth? Its like you expect our 10th and 11th dmen to be top pairing studs

Yeah it's a bit out of context he is talking about nobody stepping up...the six/seven regulars are good. Flames are better prepared to lose 3 top guys than most teams but it's still a massive drop
