In order to reach 95 pts and have a real chance at making the playoffs, the Flames will have to play over .600 hockey for the rest of the season.

9 games into the season and playoffs are a long-shot.

Sure Backlund, you have a really good team. Sure ya do bud.

Me saying “I don’t know how people watch” (or however I said it) was mostly said in jest. As in I don’t know how you do it.
You ticked off a lot of people when you wandered into a GT, of a Flames come back win and posted these gems (this is from just a single game thread that you de-railed and then de-railed the PGT further).

"I just don’t know how you have hope."

"I don’t know why y’all decided to tune into this game in the first place. This was so predictable."

"I’d just rather not watch this gutless version of the team night after night, and a predictable loss to our rivals, with barely a whimper."

And when several pointed it out to you, you just argued with them further.

fair, "not much" would have been a better choice of words

sometimes getting not much is far better than signing a guy to a retirement contract. Toffoli can shoot and is playing with an absolute superstar, not surprised he is doing well but I'm still good with him not signed here.

And the people pining for a rebuild? Guys...its too goddamned late.

Treliving saddled us with old, expensive players for almost the next decade.

Buckle up and settle in. This is gonna suck.

Yeah! Lets add Hanifin and Lindholm. Anyone notice that they were actually on the ice tonight? How did they positively affect the outcome?

Oh they didnt? Sweet! Lets keep them around longer and give them gigantic raises. That makes tons of sense.

I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong but I'm not sure what i'm admitting to in this case.

Can we shame Huberdud and Crapdri into any form of GAF? If not, both should hear it from the fans every day until they retire. The gall to collect a fat paycheque and do nothing is unbelievable (and basically what politicians do?).

Like it or not for both of them...and most of the rest of the team...the only ones who can sink the message home might be angry fans of this team.

Of course Murray Edwards doesn't give a crap. His minority partners might care..but they're not really hurting either.

Huberdeau's thoughts in Florida:
*passes the puck* "I can't believe that worked" *passes to nowhere in general* "holy ####!! It worked again!" *random spin move without thinking* "Wow, maybe I'm good at this?" *dangerous no look pass across ice* "Well I'll be...I'm really not too sure how this is working, but I guess I really must be one of the greatest passers of all time."

On my way home from the game. Edmonton is an armpit.

Rebuild.

That’s all I got. I don’t have it in me to be overly upset, truthfully. There’s just nothing even remotely exciting about this team.

But will they have the patience? That's the big question. But perhaps those punshing contracts will require it. Dare to dream.
I just wish those contracts were a couple of years shorter, especially Huberdeau. Eight years means he could actually still be hurting the cap once they are trying to re-sign players we haven't even heard of yet. Even if the cap grows, he will be a comparable percentage to what Lucic was last year.
Yikes.

But your point is a god one. If he is on a 5 year deal, this team might be focused on how to get out from under it, as well as Kadri. Right now, they must realize that is impossible.

Can’t blame him for making those comments. He’s going to say all the right things even if he truly realizes the team is bad.

What concerns is me more is what the vibe is around management. If they share in the narrative that “this is a good team that is simplify underperforming” then we are in for a slow, painful ride. It’s shameful that this team has to go into a rebuild kicking and screaming.

To me this is on Conroy at the moment. He needs to convince ownership and Maloney that the only way out of this mess is via a rebuild. If he continues to preach the same nonsense as Tre, believing in this group and the need to adjust to different coaching etc then it’s just going to inevitably delay what needs to happen.

You're making it sound like he's never experienced a break up before, and being traded once in a league and game where that happens to 99% of players irrevocably shattered his world.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with the pressure of his contract and being at the forefront with expectations in a hockey market.

He was practically anonymous in Miami, and got to play in Barkov's shadow despite producing more. That's, like, the perfect situation for anybody that doesn't do well under pressure.

Coming here is being dropped into deep end by comparison.

People need to realize Sutter wasn't fired because he was a bad coach, he's still a good defensive coach (and his offensive system is boring and a bit flawed but can work)

He was fired because half the team wanted to leave with him as coach, a year after Gaudreau and Tkachuk already left, and you couldn't have that as the org.

Even if Sutter would have stayed the players that he'd have success with would want out, and then you're stuck in a spot where you can't bottom out with him as coach and aren't going to have the talent to win.

At least now they might bottom out.

It ain't just Huberdud. Flames had FOUR passes in a row intercepted in their neutral zone in the first period. Can't tell you whose they were offhand, but that was the level of play. On top of that throwing the puck blindly all over the ice and being unable to do anything on two 2-man PPs?

Bench the stars and put 'em in the pressbox. Embarrass them. Bring up kids from ... anywhere and let 'em play a game or three.

If they think that's "enjoyment" maybe they should have more of it from Huska (who of course won't do anything like that).

I'm pretty sure it could be done. We do have LTIR possibilities but the management doesn't seem to want to use them.
