I don't really get why he wouldn't sign somewhere.
He essentially was getting the UFA experience, able to pick a team that was interested in him.
If anything this was better then UFA, because it removes alot of the risk for him.

Andersson is a beauty!
He's a warrior, was a Flame through and through, has swagger, and seems like a great person. One of my favourite Flames, sad to see him go, but hockey is a business, and this was the right move for everyone.

Rasmus Andersson finishes his time with the Flames with 584GP 57G 204A 261Pts
This makes him 6th All Time in Points as a Flames D man, and 28th among all skaters. There is no doubt history will remember him as one of the great Flames, though it will be impossible not to associate his legacy with the Failures of the Treliving era.

I think the total opposite. He couldn’t even negotiate with a team unless Conroy liked and agreed to the offer and, from all reports, it was only Boston.
For all we know none of the teams Andersson was actually interested in hearing offers from were able to put something together that Conroy liked enough to allow those offers, including Vegas.

It was reported that the morning of the trade Andersson said he wanted to test free agency and wouldn't sign with anyone. A few of the teams completely left the trade talks and Conroy took what he felt was the best offer from the remaining teams.

Some players are just more flexible, not because they put their former team "ahead of themselves", but because they aren't hard lining on one or two places in a 32 team league (and they understand that this is a business and teams aren't there to go out of their way to arrange ideal scenarios for them) and so, in the process, they're willing to do the team a solid. i.e. If this was Tanev, he would have inked that extension in a number of places. That doesn't make Tanev an idiot. He's just not a dead set on Vegas like Raz and Hanifin were.
For the time being this is a UFA deal, but Rasmus eventually extending in Vegas is all but a formality. This wasn't nearly as egregious as how Hanifin went about it, but it was still a guy making things harder by nixing extensions with any other team that a decent offer was coming from, at the end of the day.
It doesn't make him a bad guy, but it is annoying.

I actually think that what this all shows is that Rasmus isn't just going into FA for the money. If money was the only thing he cared about, he would take a big 8-year extension, and wouldn't risk a career-ending (or contract-limiting) injury over the remaining regular season, olympics, and Stanley Cup playoffs.
I think he probably wants to choose a city that works for his family. And as a fellow human, I completely understand that.

Well he better hope he doesn't do a Dennis Schoder. Turned down a 4 year $84million contract to sign for a 1 year $5.9mil after free agency. hahhaha
and seriously if you have young kids... why would you sign in a kyithole city in a kyithole country?

The real UFA experience is in the offseason, with plenty of time to think about things (a month or two after the end of the season), visit cities during the courting period, sit and talk with the family.
This deal came about mainly during an extended road trip, with games every other day and practices in between. Dude got back, played a game and made a decision to not decide yet.

A late first round pick won't do much, so in that case I'd rather see Boston take out Vegas. Obviously that's not going to happen.

I don't think any player should put the needs of his team he is leaving above his own, but he can also not put it out in the public that he only intends on re-signing with one team before a trade is made.

But wasn't that just gossip? Did he not come out and say that was bs?

Thank you, some up and down times but you were truly a warrior.
One of the best Flames picks after the Cup.

I really hope Andersson does his time in Vegas regardless of SC win or not and then bounces to a different team. Fingers crossed.

That isn't what happened. Andersson told Conroy (not the public) that he intended to re-sign with nobody (not one team).

I think it's a fait accompli. He didn't want to weaken his new team too much, so didn't agree to an extension as part of the trade.
From a Vegas POV they didn't really part with much. They will see themselves as contenders next season, making the 1st fairly late in all likelihood. The cupboards aren't stocked but they don't need to be, they know UFAs will sign there.
Watch him sign in a week like Noah.

I don't think he cares about that at all. Everything his new team gave up (except Whitecloud, whose spot he is taking) was futures that won't affect him for years to come, if ever.

When Hanifin was traded, it was generally known that he only wanted to re-sign with Tampa. A lot of people forget that.

That's my point. No stars came back to immediately weaken Vegas, and Andersson could really help them get back to the conference final or final.

The rumoured Boston offer (with extension) didn't have any stars leaving to weaken the Bruins, either. I think that's pretty much a given when a team is adding talent for a playoff run.
