I suspect that it came down to what type of contract he would sign to bypass UFA. He was perhaps open to re-signing, but at a rate that no one was going to go for.

Funny thing is I like a good rebuild. I like watching the kids play and learn the game. So, we're actually heading into what I like about sports.

Whitecloud is probably the best part of the trade, relatively speaking. Solid defenseman, good contract. Can play right away at an NHL level.
Magic beans that won’t be drafted for a year or two and depending on that development, and the types of players here when those players start the development, is by no mean a sure thing in 3-5 years.

I wonder when a traded player gets removed from the group chat.

If Conroy chooses to flip Whitecloud, everyone who was in on Raz. Still needs a deffenceman and he is already signed. Except Vegas.

Flames just really need to be proactive for once. Market is headed towards extra years being valuable, so if the offers are there, just go for it. But I'm already preparing myself for the "Flames have decided to keep both Whitecloud and Coleman and revisit in the offseason" message at the deadline, just like in the past.

Sure, but next year they’re in the mix with four teams for the last spot, and Whitecloud is playing on the second pair. I doubt he’s offloaded in that scenario, and that seems like quite familiar territory.

A second is easy for Whitecloud
He's very comparable to Brandon Carlo, manage it right and you should be able to get a 1st IMO

Conroy also has to voice to Disco Don what his concerns are, but as a rookie GM I understand the tough position he is in. He's doing the best he can with the idiots above.
|
Flames were hoping to sneak a playoff appearance into the middle of a rebuild. It would have been fun.
What did it cost them? They probably could have gotten a better prospect than a 2nd round pick in three years.
I'm pretty sure the organization would value a playoff appearance more than that.

Conroy did extremely well, for having his hands tied.

He needs to stop getting his hands tied though. The trade is likely ok, but, he needs to stop waiting until UFA year to make decisions on players and getting his hands tied.

Maybe
To me the priority is trading Coleman and Kadri this year:
Do that and your not battling for the final playoff spot next year IMO

The Regina Pats have a kid named Schultz who is currently 15 and has 8 points in -5 games. Put up 93 points in 44 games in U-18 AAA as a 14 year old.

Extra years only have value if the player is playing well. Andersson was pretty bad all of last year, so I don't think an extra year at that point was all that tantalizing.
The best choice was the choice he made. Hope that Andersson would bounce back in a contract year and increase his trade value. Just my opinion, but I think he was worth more now than he was at the end of last season.

No, it's not Misa or Hagens but that was never realistic anyway. Conroy probably did the best he could do with hands that were partially tied. People can argue could have been more last year but that's debatable with the rumoured names being thrown around.
At the end of the day, Andersson is having a great year offensively but struggling defensively slotted too high, so no wonder a team like San Jose wasn't going to pony up for him to go to the same situation, essentially.

1. Thank god that's finally over
2. Decent return for a rental
3. Hopefully helps block the oilers but sucks as we have the VGK 1st this year
4. Complainers complaining, what a shock
5. Please trade Coleman now so we don't do this next TDL with him
