(he could have signed a contract like Jarome Iginla did the day of making his debut in the 96 playoffs)

Iginla. Signed his contract after Kamloops was eliminated and on a plane to Calgary to play against Chicago the next day or so.

There was also the politics of the pending lockout too. Entry level deals were going to be a negotiating point and the League was hell bent on getting a salary cap with linkage. A lot of players from that 2003 draft that teams did not sign until after the new CBA was in place.

IIRC the Flames signed Phaneuf just before the lockout as there was some talk that unsigned players from that draft might become free agents or re-enter the draft if the lockout went long enough. So the Flames didn't want to take that risk. I can't remember who it was but I thought one richer owner was annoyed because the Flames were a team who needed a cap and here they were signing a player that would be capped after this lockout. I think the Flyers signed Richard's and Carter at the same time. But maybe it was old Ed because he probably was pushing for making teams who didn't sign 2003 draft picks lose their players as free agents for being cheap and forcing a lockout.

To my memory, the Flames were down 3 of their top 6 at one point in the playoffs, I think Lydman, Leopold and Gauthier were all out, Montador and Commadore were #7/8 starting the playoffs, and basically played the whole run as a 3rd pairing. 1 game the dressed Brandon Evans, gave him 35 seconds in the first period then played the game with 5 Dmen.

I think it's incredibly likely that with a couple bubble players on the 3rd pairing, Ference and Warner as a second pair, and Regher + whoever happened to be healthy as the first pairing the players were openly advocating for the hotshot rookie to dress

They wanted the help because three starters on D were injured.

Yes that's right. Teams didn't want to sign a player not knowing what it meant post lockout (but as mentioned, then did sign Dion before the lockout) and the PA was urging players like Phaneuf not to sign because they might get more $ guaranteed post lockout. There was the various potential scenarios about those players becoming free agents but that was mostly rhetoric from the PA as part of negotiations.

Anyways, looked it up and they did talk about it in April 29 2004 Herald but I don't have full access.

Leopold wasn't injured, at least he never missed any games. The team played 26 games and here is how many each defensemrn played:
Ference - 26 GP
Regehr - 26 GP
Leopold - 26 GP
Warrener - 24 GP
Commodore - 20 GP
Montador - 20 GP
Gauthier - 6 GP
Lydman - 6 Go
Evans - 2 GP

Having one more d for depth would have been nice. Evans played two games but had so little ice time I'm not sure you can even say he played.

yeah the real need was during the 2 Brennan Evans games, but we survived that round anyhow. would he have helped in the finals? Maybe. Lydman was back for the last 3 games- Sutter wasn't enamoured I don't think (maybe compounded by the injury that he was recovering from)

could we have won game 3 (the 1-0 loss with the early 5 on 3 goal), or the one goal losses in 6 or 7 with a rookie Phaneuf in lieu of one of the Doors? hard to know

I know Gary Roberts was next man up in the 86 finals when the Flames were so decimated by injuries that they had by that point pressed half of the Moncton team into action as well as bringing a coach out of retirement- but what I didn't remember til just now is that he had played a handful of games with Moncton the year prior- I'm assuming that he had a NHL deal and not a AHL only deal, so I can't remember. just recall him being interviewed pregame on the radio as the next up black ace at one point(he had won the Memorial cup earlier that week)

I think I read the Flames aren't doing a morning skate today? (Which seems kinda odd?)

If that's true we probably don't hear if he's playing or not today until warmups, and if no morning skate I'd presume he watches this one, maybe plays the next one.

^ Read the same thing yesterday, but Wills just posted the lines (projected I guess but he did note Miromanov was in Andersson's spot so I assume they skated) and no Parekh.

So probably a "just in case" trip and hey, its California so why not.

The Flames are not an organization that would leave his parents hanging as to whether or not he will be playing. I suspect if they really are in California he will play.
