Taking a while to get to 5000
|
So weird that this came out of nowhere last night with Craig Button and now we're hearing it gain some momentum. If not Toronto, who would he waive for?

$1-$2M in retention is likely a giant "meh" over the span of the next 5 years. If we're talking full-load (50%) then yeah, it gets a bit more serious as $3.5M isn't super light...but in years 3-5 of the Kadri deal, that $3.5M would effectively be....3.5% of the salary cap in those years. So, not much.

As someone who has season tickets I'm fully willing to support a rebuild if it means an end to two decades of mediocrity.

The issue isn't just the dollar figure. Its also tying up one of only three retentions spots for the next five years
It could affect trades at TDL during that span

Detroit has a large Lebanese population. That team would make sense for him as well and his family.
Kadri for a 1st 3rd and Wallinder?

That's a heck of a 'what if' situation.
The Flames don't have that many more players they'd retain on to trade at this stage.
Weegar -> doubt they'd need to, or would want to.
Huberdeau -> even with retention, I don't think this contract moves
Coleman -> perhaps?
Andersson -> at $4.55...maybe?
They've got Marky eating a slot for 2 years.
Kadri eating one for 5 years?
Still one there to use on expiring deals or on a massive package.

I might be wrong but that's not how retention slots work I think.
It resets every year. You get 3 per year and they don't carry over.

How does is work if a team is retaining salary and the contract gets bought out later?

I don't think so.
I think you get 3 active retention slots, period.

The retaining team pays the same percentage of the buyout amount for the same length of time the buyout lasts
So if they retain 30% on Kadri for five years and he gets bought out at the end of year 3, they retain 30% of the buyout for four years after that (turning 5 years of retention into 7, but at a reduced amount).

Who needs to add in this deal and what?
To Ottawa: Kadri
To Calgary: Norris
Norris is young but had horrible injuries and his contract is questionable because of that.

Definitely not. You retain, it's for the life of the contract.

Yikes! It's definitely a reason for not retaining on Kadri's contract. A retention slot has value, especially if a team agrees to one for multiple years.

I don't live in Calgary but I'd get season tickets if they go that direction with strong conviction.
I will buy a new jersey and keep supporting them however I can from BC.
I will then buy myself and my son matching McKenna jerseys in 2026.
