I don't buy into the idea that a player making it public that he wants a trade suddenly makes it harder for the GM to get a good return for them. I still remember after the Flames traded Phaneuf for a bunch of spare parts hearing about other GMs saying they didn't even know he was available and they would have given more for him.

I love Z, and I think this team is WAY too soft as is, but I don't think he is a really decent top 4 defencemen. I think he can fill-in for stretches, but he isn't a top 4 D. I will be sad to see him go - he checks off quite a lot of boxes for this team - but he is an investment that has unquestionably paid-off handsomely in Calgary, and the Flames should cash-in this investment and re-invest it.


I do dislike that his agent made it public right away. I would understand if he asked for a trade quietly in the off-season, and they were left in limbo with not trade and no contract up to this point. You keep trade requests in-house until you feel that you are not being taken seriously.


Outside from that, I wish him well and a tonne of success wherever he lands, hopefully out east somewhere. I must say, his agent does have great timing with the Toronto-Montreal swing.



I think the Flames should rebuild, and thought he is young enough to remain on the team, I also do believe that he will get a haul to help kickstart that rebuild.

A couple of weeks ago the Flames were trying hard to extend Lindholm and Hanafin to long extensions based on a decent preseason. Last week they put all negotiations on hold because of an early season losing skid. Apparently they are scouring the market to try and find a player thst could get Huberdeau going.

The Flames are letting the current steer the ship and they are stuck in a whirlpool. They don't have a consistent direction.

If your a lower priority signing do you really want to wait while they figure things out? Zadorov wants a contract or a trade to set him up for his big payday. This helps push Conroy into action and maybe bumps Zadorov up the priority list.

A couple of things:

If Zadorov is looking to put together a resume for next season, he shouldn't assume he will get a bunch more playing time somewhere else. Is he top 4 on any serious contenders?

I doubt Conroy is ready to pull the plug on the season. I'm sure he wants a good draft pick but I'd expect some NHL depth coming back for the back end too. Assuming the deal happens quickly.

I was saying all along that Z wants to be on a contender. That's his main goal, and I respect that.

I think we should sell high, and we're going to get good pieces back. Z wouldn't be the difference between making the playoffs and missing them. He's a luxury, and an awesome human being. Glad we had him here for 2.5 years.

Great news. He seems like a good guy but the thought of giving him a long term contract was always terrifying to me. He’s a good bottom pairing defenseman but you don’t overpay those guys.

Well, good that the Panthers inquired. He lives there in the off-season, so perhaps there is a way increase the the assets the Flames receive if Zadorov signs a team-friendly deal with them.

Big-Z plays a great game and the agent lets everyone know he's available. That sounds like great marketing to maximize the value coming back to Calgary.
