Well, Johnny being gone would basically mean that this year was the team's big shot at a run. This is what we got, a trip to the second round and beaten badly by the Oilers after so many years of this core. It seems it may have ended with a whimper rather than a bang.

Yeah it's very disappointing he and his agent kept stringing the Flames along until the last hours. Maybe he was really torn about the whole thing but the Flames are now way behind the 8-ball in free agency.

Today isn't the story. This whole year is the story.
Which is more valuable:
• Gaudreau playing his career year in Calgary, getting a first-place finish in the division, and winning a playoff series for only the second time in the salary cap era; or
• Getting marginal picks and prospects by selling him as a rental last year, being a bubble team, and watching him have his career year somewhere else?
The same people who are crying for Treliving to be fired now would have cried for him to be fired if Gaudreau scored 115 points for some other team.
There is no winning with this crowd.

Well, I'll be super pissed at Johnny if he and Lewis strung the Flames along right until the end.

Yeah, the asset management crowd conveniently omits that keeping Johnny led to a significant chance at a run to the conference finals or more in 2022.

Winning a Stanley Cup is the goal. I'd much rather my team make a legitimate effort to win one rather than being a team that wins a playoff round once a decade or so.

Go back to multiple posts over the past three or four years where the pitchforks were out to see how inconsistent he’s been at times. I’m not a hater but he slots in well at $9.5. At $11 it’s a franchise altering number and if you’re banking on him as your future cornerstone for the next eight years many of us will be screaming in five years where this will be a handcuff to what we do. Same posters complain about what McDavid’s contract has done for the oil and he’s a far better player (honestly objectively). These massive contracts are team killers.
|
Not having a enough talent on your team is also a team-killer, and it’s hard to acquire talent like Johnny. It’s far from certain that the contract would be a handcuff after 5 years. I’m not certain of what he’s worth but it’s a sum of a huge number of variables, and even some are beyond the team’s on-ice success.

Johnny Gaudreau informed the #Flames he will not be returning to Calgary. Emotional conversation for both sides, as the Flames rolled out the red carpet to keep him.
A massive offer was presented, as we reported, but this wasn't about money.

Why would he string them along. I think he was very conflicted on leaving.

Also, if any of this news holds true, I'll be hoping for a Tkachuk trade and a Flames rebuild/retool...I can't watch a team that just floats through the NHL every year with no real chance at making a push.
I can watch a team that decides to rebuild or retool though.

Vent how ever you want to vent, but it doesn't take Brad very long to present an offer to an agent. If he didn't have a backup plan, he shouldn't have a job.
