Not everyone has a high school education. But it is also obvious to folks without a high school education, my uncle has a grade 9 education and he has taken the brave stand of believing the scientists on this one.

Older people more at risk ≠ every old person is going to die of COVID.

The virus could mutate ≠ it will certainly mutate into a form that will spread like wildfire and be far more lethal than any previous strain if we don't cancel the WJC.

Over a population of billions of people, with hundreds of millions of iterations, the chance is definetly there that it could mutate into a deadly and fast spreading strain.

I know it is easy to make fun of red deer - but whose responsibility was it to make sure the players and the regular folk were separated. Does not seem like a hard thing to do.

The organizers have taken a real bath on this for the past two years. I thought hockey Canada sold the tourney to local organizers, but perhaps I mistaken about that.

I feel awful for the players. For many of them this was their only/final chance at playing for their country at a major international tournament.

No, there is no such chance. In the first place, a virus does not magically acquire DNA out of nowhere that causes it to infect people with a radically different disease. In the second place, there is a well-known genetic tradeoff between lethality and transmissibility in viruses. The literature on the subject is quite clear.

I am not taking any chance at all, because the chance of what benvoyonsdonc is describing is zero.

Curious what actions they took to insulate the players once they knew Omicron was a threat. Even with weddings and that going on at the hotel or whatever, you need to pivot as best you can.

Water under the bridge now but it’s clear that avoiding a positive test in this environment takes a lot of effort.

Uh, mutation is a random copying error. No magic required, it’s just a matter of odds. When you have billions of viral particles being generated in billions of hosts, the math tends to favor significant and sometimes seriously deadly mutations. I wouldn’t hang my hat on that rhetoric.
