Maybe not this one, but there will be a contract where he learns. The Flames need continuity in the GM position, we should just give him more time to learn what he needs to learn.

I'm really just hoping that Tanev brings stability during the regular season, and then an identity to the team in the playoffs.
And that he stays healthy.

The Flames really better hope that Tanev isn't the same player as his last 2 years.
2013-16 Tanev: Very good player.
2016-18 Tanev: Very meh player.
2018-20 Tanev: Massive oof.

No, it isn't.
Your fourth line will typically have replacement level wingers and pk specialists.
you need your 4C to be a cut above and able to carry his line.
Look at virtually every stanley cup winning tram the last two decades, their 4th line centre was more productive than the 4th line centres on mediocre teams. That's what Ryan is for us. It's what Ryan was for us in 2018-19 with Mangiapane and Hathaway flanking him.
here's a post I once made about Matt Stajan. All the same concepts apply:

Hamonic: $3.875 (why this much? I never liked it)
Tanev: $4.5M
It cost an extra $600k to replace a player that cost a 1st and two 2nds.
It’s a bargain if they produce at similar levels. Hamonic’s fancy stats are just as appalling as Tanev’s, outside the years Brodie and Hanifin dragged him around.
I’ve never had a problem with Tanev watching the Canucks play. I suspect he’ll become a fan favorite, though it’s aways possible Loubardias poisons the well with hyperbolic tales of Tanev being the finest human being to ever lace up a pair of skates.

Nothing says a good signing like hoping the player gets stolen from the team in an expansion draft?

I am not a fan of the signing trying to look for positives.

Maybe if it was 3 years I could get on board with this but this looks to me like it's going to be a bad contract in the last two years.

Sorry this is such a bad comparison that it defies belief. Reinhart was not an NHL player, he was barely an AHL defenseman. Everyone knew that except for Oilers management who the Islanders saw coming a mile away and gutted like a fish.
Tanev is a very good defensive defenseman who plays middle pair but can fill in on the top pairing and won't hurt you.
While I'm not nuts about the length of the deal, the AAV is where its going to be for a top 3 defenseman. Canuck fans hate to see him go because he's a blood and guts guy. He's also a pretty good mentor for what is going to be a very young blueline next year.
I think people need to take a breath on this one. I think this is going to be a decent signing, and JM will turn into a terrific signing.

Show us where Brodie says he would have stayed in Calgary for $5M but it wasn't offered.

I don't give a #### if the found money was placed in the band of my boxers by Kerry Washington, on the 4th line it is a bad contract
good signings can turn into bad contracts, just look at Frolik.
|
So , I guess that’s a difference in opinion or projection.
I don’t believe Bennett has proved yet that he is a legit 3C.
Ryan has, IMO. Things can change though. Regardless, still a good contract, as
there was No acquisition cost.

That is true, I do not know what happened with Brodie. But I do feel that Brad is learning, a few more off-seasons should do the trick.

If you are going to take a shot at the board, don't be so lazy about it. EVERY day there are tons of different opinions posted on this board.
Stuff like this is annoying.

Not to mention the fact that "CP" actually didn't say lucky, they said they were carried by their goaltender, which the Flames signed.

Buuuut...
Four years is IMO a lot of years for a guy for whom playing ALMOST 70 games is an achievement worth noting, and who while fine isn't what you'd call a difference maker. Not crazy about the cap hit either.
|
We would always like a better deal. But we are competing with 30 other teams. Gotta pay and 4.5 for a #3 D isn't bad.
Btw, I disagree that he isn't a difference maker. Seems like you are fixated on offensive numbers. You sound like you wouldnt like guys like Gelinas, Williams or Regher on your team. Would a guy like Marc Andre Bergeron be better instead?
Not all about points.

Feels like Brouwer 2.0.
I see 2 injury riddled seasons the Flames will need cap space to re-sign Tkachuk and make other moves and need to buy this deal out.

Tbh, I just read the r/hockey thread for this signing that's full of Canucks fans calling the Flames jerks for ripping their heart out by stealing Tanev.
There is a sliver of me that has hope.
