Here's a quick look at all the UFAs to be on the blue line that are at all relevant.
Markov
Girardi
Wideman
Streit
Beauchemin
Kulikov
Shattenkirk
Stone
Oduya
Del Zotto
Franson
Daley
Russell
Hainsey
Alzner
Polak
Tyutin
Campbell
The bold ones are the ones that are most likely as #4/5 guys.
Stone tops my list for UFA #1.
As for the #5 spot, I'd be perfectly fine with any of Daley, Campbell, Polak, Russell, Franson, or Girardi depending on cost to sign.

Stone could sign for less to stay with Calgary he was thrilled to come back to Calgary when the trade was made. Treliving has spoken highly of him, and athletes like being needed.
Hamonic would be great of course but I think the Flames would have to give up too much to gain NYI's interest because they are over valuing him and some team is desperate enough to give in.

I hope not. They shouldn't pay big acquisition costs for a premium defenseman when they already lost Hickey, a second, and a third this year

Yup, I've liked Methot since he was in Columbus. I've always been impressed by him and he doesn't get much fanfare until paired with Karlsson.
BTW, he's 32. If you're going to rip a guy, get your facts straight.

If that's the money they want then you walk away in my mind, and move on to cheaper options that are solid 5s, hoping the play of Kulak and Andersson/Kylington/depth signing can make it work.
Sooner or later this team has to assume they will make the playoffs and do the legwork in Sep-Dec to get young players ready to be an impact in April and May.
|
Yeah this exactly. I don't want the Flames to overpay to build some super elite defense corps, thinking that could cover other weaknesses.
Better to take chances with what you have and keeping some dry powder vs. overpaying for a #4.
Feels like the Flames are due for a "bargain" signing. Would be great if that's Stone.

I doubt it. I have no doubt Treliving has talked to every team with an available defenseman.

Good list. I would be very happy if they signed Stone and one of your recommendations for the #5 spot. Kulak, Bartkowski, Wotherspoon, Andersson, and Kylington can then battle it out for #6 and #7.

If that's the asking price for Hamonic give me a Stone & Alzner signing any day.

Yeah, because signing a bad d-man (Alzner) to big money and big term is way smarter than trading assets for a better d-man.

Really I thought Stone was a nice addition last year because him and Brodie did play well together and the Flames had a top 4 they could put out for 48 minutes a night. The players all seemed to know what their role was, and were able to play that role.
I think you want to have that top 4, and emerging guys on the bottom pair who can take a bit more when injuries hit. But if you try to play an entire season with 5 top 4 guys...I think the unit as a whole doesn't seem to find it's stride.
So once they find a true number 4, I'd be looking to the bargain bin for another 5-6-7 guy come in and compete with the lower end depth.

Since this relates to exactly what you're talking about. Here's a quote from the Francis article linked a few posts up from this.
"The club’s priority over the next few days revolves around acquiring a high-end defenceman to round out a top four every bit as impressive as Nashville’s and Anaheim’s.
The plan after that is to land a significant fifth defenceman to ensure at all times the team’s biggest strength revolves around its back end.
“That’s the model,” said Flames GM Brad Treliving of a direction many teams want to take but only a few can."
I think getting an amazing top 5 defense would really makes us a cup contender soon. We'd have the depth to survive an injury or two to the blue line. I know some people think we need a winger for some reason but I'm fine with the forwards mostly as is and spend all our spare money on getting a really good 4th and 5th dman. We already have enough dynamic talent and skill up front IMO, it just needs to mature. Rounding out the defense makes us a real threat.

I'm not sure why some are still holding out hope or assuming that Brodie might play RD again. Gulutzan has spoken at length and proven that he wants his defencemen to play on their traditional side.
Unless the Flames have zero RHD, I don't see Brodie ever playing left side again as long as Gully is coach

I mainly want Hamonic because it would be funny to shove it in the Oilers faces like the Hamilton acquisition.

I agree. Re-signing Michael Stone won't cost us any asset.

Defensively they are already pretty good if they get decent goaltending.... we saw that last season.
Obviously a strong partner for Brodie is a must have. Beyond that though they can muddle through with cheaper journeymen or some of the kids on the farm.
They need to add some offense somehow though. Whether its a pure offensive guy up front or getting some more scoring from the blueline (which is hard to count on)
This formula was shown to be the case pretty clearly in the SC final. Niether team was top 10 in GA last year....both were in the top 10 in GF however.

I think any boost the Flames might need scoring should come from within. While Tkachuk was a nice surprise and Backlund had a career year, Bennett, Gaudreau, Brouwer, and Brodie were all clearly not at their offensive best. The Flames were also a top-ten scoring team from January–April when they were playing their best hockey of the year—it seems like a reasonable expectation without the addition of outside help.
