"He was kinda driving us crazy, because he just wanted to get out there and play,'' said his mom, Jane. "It's bittersweet because my younger son Matty, who plays at Boston College, left at the end of August and John went to the World Cup.
"It was kind of an added advantage that he got to come home. We thought it would only be for a couple of days until they ironed out the differences.
"It's good. He'll be fine. He's just anxious to get back and get playing. He loves Calgary. That's all he kept saying. 'I love Calgary. I love the fans there. I love my teammates. I just want to get back to that.'
"He wanted to be there with his teammates."

Yup. Gaudreau will get three million upfront this season. The remaining 3.75 million throughout the season.
Cap hit is still the full 6.75

Yep. Most likely Vey with Bollig probably drawing in on Wednesday. Unless the Flames pick someone up tomorrow on waivers. Then Bollig goes to Stockton too.

Now I'm not suggesting he was ever worth $8 million, but let's not lose sight that Flames only bought one UFA year. If BT had kept him under $7 on a 7 or 8 year deal I'd be throwing rose petals at his feet. With his current deal, I would call it a draw. About even for both sides.
|
I'm confused, would this be in some sort of attempt to make BT slip or something?

This team has been shallow asset wise for decades, and one of the reasons is they continually mis-time when to move on from players. When it is all said and done it may well end up being that they got nothing out of the last core of this team: Iginla, Kipper, Bouwmeester, Regehr. The only hope of ANY return from those 4 guys right now is Klimchuk and Poirier.
That's grim.
I wanted at least 7. Happy with 6. Wanted 7.
I don't see what's wrong with that.
|
I would say it's not just knowing when to move on, but building the right core in the right place. As much as I dearly love 3 of the players you mentioned, upon reflection they just weren't enough of a core to be consistent contenders. I would argue that recent championship teams aren't who they are because they cut bait at the right time. Rather they built the right core in the first place.
But I know what you are saying. Now let's hope Monahan, Gaudreau prove they are worth building around. They haven't done that yet. If they aren't, then any trade is inevitably going to set you back IMO.

You guys are seriously discussing trading Gaudreau? In the Gaudreau just got signed thread? Remind me not to invite you to parties, or fiestas, or anything with fun.

To Jiri Hrdina,
Can you provide some examples where teams have off-loaded their stars at the right time?
I don't see what one can really do where you have a player who has fully committed to your team and then you drop them because you offered too much term making them a near-dead or declining asset in part because of your own contract agreement. The Sedins are holding up well but their days are numbered.
How should this be managed?
And an edit: 6 years guaranteed comes with a lot of risk from the owners. That means Johnny gets that money no matter what. Everybody assumes he's going to get better, that is not guaranteed.

Lol, "The wee wizard". I like that.
Sounds like he was getting pressure to hold out and really wanted to play. Me excite!

Phenomenal deal by BT to get Gaudreau at that cap hit. While I would have preferred 7-8 years like many others, remember this is still the 2nd longest contract in Flames history (after Monahan's).
Still, I think the 6 years works great for both sides. Gaudreau gets to his UFA status at age 29. He still has time to cash in on a long term deal. Should he decide to extend with the Flames, he can do so during year 5 at age 28. An 8 year deal would have brought him to age 30. Suddenly another long term contract at age 28-29 looks a whole lot better then one at age 30. If (big IF) the team wants to trade him during the last couple years for a king's ransom, 28-29 is a whole lot nicer number then 30. Calgary gets him for the duration of his prime and the cup window is open during that time.
Iginla never signed a contract longer then 5 years. After his Conn Smyth worth performance in '04, his next contract was only 3 years and was a much bigger percentage of the cap. So much can happen in 6 years time.
And honestly I also think other GMs'/owners around the league are ecstatic with this contract. It's nice to see a contract that goes against the norm of paying huge money that sets the new bar. Whether it's Kane, Towes, Kopitar, Getzlaf etc, it just seems every big star sets the new bar and then every player in the league feels they have to be paid in that ballpark. Hopefully next time a player tosses out the ''Tarasenko'' contract (or another similar contract) as a reason why they should get paid big money, a GM can point at Gaudreau's to counter it.
I'm super glad the Flames bent but didn't break. If this was Feaster or most other GMS, he would have had Gaudreau signed a lot sooner but at his full asking price simply to appease fans and media that ''wanted the damned thing signed''.
So glad we have BT as our GM.

Johnny just has to stay at his current level and he more than earns his $6.75 per year. 8 years at $8 million would be a risk though.

I flew from Calgary to Vancouver today and this was the first alert that greeted me when I landed and turned off airplane mode.
Such a nice Thanksgiving treat to land to.

So happy this is finally done. Just wouldn't have been the same on Wednesday if Johnny wasn't playing. Gotta love the cap hit and the term is fine. 6 years is a lot time and hopefully with the help of Johnny we will be a contender. So excited. I can't wait for Wednesday now!

I don't agree at all.
When certain posters take a hard line stance on something without proof or foundation beyond their own belief that it must be so, and call out/chastise/berate those who believe otherwise, they ought to get some comeuppance when they're proven wrong.
IMO, it's that type of community policing that helps maintain a higher quality in a board. Otherwise you get a Don Cherry-esque community: Tonnes of bluster and bravado up front, preening when they get something right, and radio silence when they're wrong.
