The more I think about this, and the closer it gets, the more excited I am for the season. I'm predicting good things.

The year before his contract is up is "Lockout insurance" as well, mirroring the first year of his deal.
Off quote: The more I think about this contract the more I feel the years are perfect too. 5 years, not enough. 7-8 years, high risk boat anchor. Contigent on the fact that the AAV would very likely be higher and thus the risk.
Super duper happy with todays announcement.

Oops yeah that's true, but whatever. Regardless its not $6.75 with $3M bonuses this year like I was responding to.
$6.75M per.

Performance bonuses are not allowed on standard player contracts. There are provisions for them only on ELCs and +35 deals.

The signing bonus concept really seems to throw people for a loop.

I don't know much, but as I understand it, it is guaranteed money upfront, as opposed to salary that is received for each day "worked" during the season. That's it, right?

Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, Brodie, and Hamilton all core players locked in long term at under 7 million. Backlund, Frolik, and Brouwer all locked in at reasonable depth contracts.
Counting the days until Engelland, Stajan, Smid, and Wideman are off the books. Fortunately all but one of those is gone after this season.

I didn't know this. So for example standard contracts don't have bonuses for example for winning the Stanley cup? I really thought they did.

Some don't seem to appreciate the AAV goes up the more UFA years you buy. So $6.75 for 6 years is not the same "value" as 6.75 for 8 years.
Now I'm not suggesting he was ever worth $8 million, but let's not lose sight that Flames only bought one UFA year. If BT had kept him under $7 on a 7 or 8 year deal I'd be throwing rose petals at his feet. With his current deal, I would call it a draw. About even for both sides.
