If we hire a green coach like Leaman, Huska, that Marlies guy, or Travis Green, Carlyle would make a good assistant.
For sure if he's open to working as an assistant. Would be like the Ottawa situation in that I have no problems with a retread like Crawford in an assistant role with a less experienced NHL head coach or first time head coach.
But Burke is not the one who will be hiring the next coach of the Calgary Flames.
Treliving has not hired a coach before. I would expect the President of Hockey Operations, a highly experienced GM, will have significant influence on this decision. Most people who claim to know how BT and Burke collaborate on major decisions is likely basing their opinion mostly on speculation.

He's the president of hockey ops and like i already said, if he didnt like him, there wouldnt even be an interview. I'm not saying treliving wont make his own decision but you cant dispute the fact that burke had input on at least giving carlyle an interview.
It's fine to say we shouldn't jump to conclusions about Burke overstepping his role and interfering with management decisions but I think it's equally foolhardy to deny he has any influence in who we hire as head coach. So far as I can tell, no one but Burke has ever hired Carlyle as a head coach in any league, and no other team has interviewed him since he was fired by the Leafs. It hardly makes you a conspiracy theorist to suggest Burke has some role in Carlyle getting an interview.

Yeah, I'm leery of these proposals that have former head coaches - and not guys who got a cup of coffee, but coaches of SC champions - happily taking a back seat to rookie head coaches.

Oh, and OF COURSE it's Burke's team. He's the friggin' President of Hockey Ops.
Even if its Burke meddling with GM duties, at least he's a hockey guy. I'm just glad we're not hearing rumors of Ken King getting involved in hockey decisions anymore.

Almost as crazy as the GM of a SC champion happily taking a back seat to a rookie GM
Burke knows Carlyle. If that's the actual objective, he would be a good judge of Carlyle's humility, ego, ambition.

No kidding. I think the only way I'd be comfortable with Carlyle on staff would be if Darryl was the head coach again.
This is essentially the situation in Ottawa as it's going to be easy to fire Boucher mid-season and have Crawford fill in. That said as long as everyone is on the same page there's no reason that it can't work and a positive season from the team simply puts Carlyle/Crawford into the head coaching conversations next offseason.
Renaud Lavoie on the Fan with Steinberg just now, whining again that the Flames waited too long to fire Hartley and it cost him a shot at the Minnesota/Ottawa jobs. Lavoie is very bitter towards Flames management about it, went on this rant umprompted.

Hawerchuk missed the playoffs his first year, but that was mainly because Williamson traded away everyone to try to win the championship the year before (including acquiring TJ Brodie).
Not sure if it happens in the WHL but seems to happen every once in a while in the OHL once a successful coach knows he's leaving he goes crazy trading away everything in the pipeline to win in his last year.
Williamson wasn't the GM, He was part of a committee that took over the GM role after Carrigan left the year before, the committee included the owner, asst GM and the DPP.
I remember reading that this speech was actually pretty fake, something the TV crew asked for. Good entertainment plays on stereotypes and contrasts, so they wanted to make one coach to be the classic "tough" coach.

Not sure why the Flames would have had any interest in Boucher or Crawford.
Ren has been completely unprofessional about this. Probably upset that he lost his one source in the Flames organization.
