It's not a job (even a management job in our everyday world) where you actually need to go through the full interview process to really understand what candidates have accomplished and how it compares to the other candidates you are considering. You know all that going into the interview, and the interview is likely more about, what else can you tell me, how do I think you'll fit into the organization and give me some thoughts on what you think the Flames should be doing based on what you know.

If the candidate hits the check marks on all of those, you hire, you don't need to hear from the other guys, especially if this was the guy who was top of your list all along based on resume. You don't risk losing him to Van or elsewhere if he comes in answered the will he fit in questions.
Not to mention they are frequently in discussion with these candidates. Whether it be via GM meetings, trade discussion, or even just regular discussions the GMs have with one another you have a pretty good feel for the guys you are working with.

I think my favourite part about this hire is two fold:

1. It's a hire. Meaning now all the "when will Burke just admit he's not going to hire anyone" folks have to shut up.
2. It's not actually a Burke re-tread or pocket guy, so all the "when will Burke just admit he's not going to hire anyone" guys can't pretend that Burke just inserted a figure head or puppet.

Burke is still the guy driving this ship, I'm not pretending that changed (and I like that), but he went out and hired someone progressive to the management team who will bring a different perspective. From the outside, this doesn't look like a YES man hire.

Don't forget that the hockey world is ultimately pretty small. These guys all know each other personally, through others or through reputation. Treliving's reputation must've been known to Burke so when he comes in and talks about a vision for the future that meshes with what Brian wants then the decision is a pretty easy one for Burke to make and does not require endless rounds of interviews with other wanna-be candidates.

Burke talked for the longest time that he didn't think he would have his guy until July so I expect Treliving must have shared some pretty creative ideas in the interviews that opened up Burke's eyes. That and pending competition from other organizations must have convinced him to act quickly rather than see him possibly join another organization. I imagine there's not a lot that Burke hasn't seen or heard over the years so I feel pretty confident that Treliving is the real deal here. Will be interesting to see how Burke describes the process in at the media announcement and ensuing interviews.

Happy with the move. Having a President like Burke I really hoped for a young up and comer. I didn't know much about Treliving, Futa, Benning but hoped it would be someone of that ilk. Glad the Flames made this move, reaction has been solid throughout the internet as well

Treliving has the best up-and-coming executive pedigree since Craig Button.

i liked this from the article http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...board/follows/

Quote:
Treliving called his situation in Phoenix “very fortunate,” noting that “we don’t necessarily have a big shop if you will, so he (Maloney) has given me the opportunity to be involved in every facet from a management perspective – in terms of your NHL team and everything that goes on with that, player contracts, minor-league teams, your pro and amateur scouting. I don’t know if there’s a time you say you’re ready and quite frankly, I don’t know if you should be worrying about what’s about of you tomorrow.

If I recall correctly Burke said that he doesn't expect to have a GM in place until after the draft back when the playoff race was still on. Coyotes could have made the playoffs which would have prevented the Treliving hire.

Well I guess Radim Vrbata is a possibility now. I didn't read the entire thread, but he may be available for the Flames in the draft as most teams shouldn't have their final lists prepared yet since there is still Junior playoffs, and the U-18's just ended. Can't remember exactly when Button was hired, but he was only prohibited from round 1. In this case the Flames are picking high enough in round 1 that who the Flames pick shouldn't impact Phoenix.

IIRC, Button was hired in early June of 2000, only a week or two before the draft, so it made sense that Dallas would need to keep him on lock down. My guess is that Treliving's hiring is far enough in advance of this year's draft that there shouldn't be any limitations on his ability to be part of his new team's draft prep.

Here's my take on this:

• When Burke announced Feaster's dismissal, he said that there was some urgency to ensure that his preferred candidate did not end up in one of the other vacancies.
• Within a couple of weeks, Treliving interviewed with Buffalo.
• Around the same time, there were a number of reports coming out of several teams expressing some frustration with the fact that Buffalo seemed to want to interview a high number of executives who were already under contract. Shortly thereafter, there were indications that Boston, Phoenix, LA and a few other teams were no longer willing to grant permission to any teams to speak with their under-contract front office personnel until after the season.
• Burke then in a couple of interviews said that the delay would affect the Flames' ability to hire their next general manager.

I expect Treliving was the only candidate interviewed because he was the candidate that Burke wanted from the beginning. The urgency to make front office changes when the Flames did suggests that they were concerned that he might be considered for another of the vacant positions, and sure enough, he was interviewed by Buffalo. I would suggest that the Flames were probably told after Buffalo's antics that they would not receive permission to speak to Treliving until after the season ended. Burke waited, and conducted his interview as he had always planned.

Part of the consensus that I'm most happy because it's not Nonis or McPhee, honestly wouldn't have been upset with Nieuwendyk.

Phoenix has finished respectably for a long while now, not sure how much of a hand Treliving had in it, but it's clearly some and hopefully we can draw on that and extrapolate the results. Excited to see the official announcement tomorrow.
