MacDermid is also a fairly decent skater. Westgarth is, ironically, at Nemisz level I think.
On a sidenote - Cane's GM was one of the vocal 'anti-fighting' GMs - might explain why Westgarth didn't get many games in, and doesn't have a fighting major this year. This was from HF boards.

@Fan960Steinberg: Kevin Westgarth fact: Former Steelers Head Coach Bill Cowher happens to be his father in law. #Flames

Duffus for duffus.
At this point, a serviceable 4th liner is probably a better asset than Nemizs.

I know. I was meaning that we should target players in the draft and such like that. Filler rent a goons are fine, but eventually, we need more high end players that can play at both ends and be a nuisance. You can only throw out the tough guys like Grats and Westgarth for 5 or so minutes a game, otherwise you're exposing yourself to more goals against. Physicality needs to be present on each line, even if it's something around Rene Bourque or Curtis Glencross' level of physicality.

Degree in psychology with pre med completed. Well spoken guy traded for a guy who we will not see on the flames. Burke loved using Orr and mclaren. He will love to use mcgratton and westgarth. Could be interesting to see

Bad news for Bouma I think. Don't see where else Westgarth would play except opposite Grats on the 4th line wing. He's a decent player but the way the Flames are building that 4th line they want 3 #### disturbers who are willing to fight more than Bouma. Could see him headed back down to Abby if he doesn't have to clear.

I have to refuse to believe that Burke fails to see the value provided by Bouma.

Like it or not, the Ws aren't magically going to pile up for the Flames by adding a guy who plays 4-5 minutes a night. You lose an asset (not an NHL skater, an Abbotsford vet/locker room leader) and you take away a roster spot from someone who might be able to score in the bigs. (Westgarth is a Flame, not going to Abby.)
Its a minor move, obvious to anyone who knows the depth chart, but it's not the move I see making a team better who was just shut out in back-to-back tilts.

And really... is there a ton of difference between this guy and Neimsz in terms of talent? Neimsz had 9 points in 32 games this year in the AHL, in his last season in the AHL Westgarth had 25 points in 76 games. That's a higher PPG for Westgarth than Neimsz has this year.
|
Maybe he's still pissed that bringing in Abbotsford made his Chilliwack Bruins have to move to Victoria, and this is his revenge...

Neimsz is on an NHL deal isn't he?

Nhl salary is what they needed to move. Hurricanes a budget team and Dreger speculating another move on its way so they needed to clear space.

I believe Bouma does have to clear to go down.
I will be very disappointed if Bouma is dropped for Westgarth to play.

Not hard to see what Burke is up to, he's the exact same size as McGrattan only 1lb lighter.

I agree Bouma has helped the Flames, but I don't think anyone doubted Burke's resolve to get bigger and tougher. 4th line is the easiest place to start.

Unless maybe Bouma can play Centre? Couple sites have him listed as a centre so he must have played there at some point.
If Westgarth has to clear waivers he's staying up and unless Grats gets moved something has to give.

You'd think Hartley would have something to say about that.
It wouldn't be the first time a GM has acquired a player, only for the coach to not play him at all. Look at Mike Commodore's story about Detroit.
