Is MacDermid a viable option? Or is he more of an AHL lifer?

Westgarth was traded last year around this time. Looks like Carolina expected a lot out of him. Carolina Hurricanes traded Anthony Stewart, a 2013 fourth-round draft pick and a 2014 sixth-round draft pick to the Los Angeles Kings for Kevin Westgarth.

The positive here is that at least they aren't overlooking options even if it is for minor trades. Nemisz wasn't ever going to get anything done here so was kind of a spare part, at least if we get some kind of value from this guy it's a good move, it does allow flexibility with moving goons around too.
In saying that, I thought with Macdermid, we were okay in this department though... I'll just hope someone else has more of an idea than I do.
EDIT: Hey, he's also a Stanley Cup winner

First time an NHL player has used "immodest" in an interview?

McGrattan is already signed for next year. Westgarth is a free agent.

Kevin is well spoken, love what he has to say, really can't wait to see him work hard on the farm.

I'm actually looking forward to watching this Calgary team become a big, mean, annoying group to play against!

Westgarth does not make McGrattan expendable. Look at Burke in Toronto in how he added legitimate heavyweights. McGrattan is the perfect example of the type of enforcer Burke loves - really tough but aren't a liability on the ice or to the team for taking bad penalties.
Westgarth is here to add to that. Hartley loves enforcers as well. I just have no idea what that 4th line is going to look like now. Bouma sits? Byron gets sent down?
Also, there is some cap savings for the Canes. Westgarth doesn't have a 2-way, and has only played 12 games thus far this season.

What does this mean from Dreger:
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 38m
Hurricanes needed to move a contract, hence the Westgarth trade.
Neimsz is on an NHL deal isn't he?

Hopefully a goon line that sends messages and takes out the other teams top players when we can't score.
Having big boys like big ern and wesgarth roaming around will make sure pieces of garbage like Ryan Kessler pay the price for being dbag hockey players.

Getting something for nothing is always good even if the asset you receive is just okay.
Nemisz was not going to be kept, nor should he have been. He was the lowest forward on the totem pole, on par with Carter Bancks. He still has "former first rounder" attached to his name so we were able to get the equivalent of a 4th or 5th round pick as that is what it would likely take to acquire Westgarth.
Westgarth is just a filler player at either level. I suppose that it is better to have more physicality in our lineup(s), but I would rather focus on getting players that play with an edge and can do things offensively. Similar to Boston with Lucic and Marchand. Poirier is a step in the right direction, but we need more of that type.

Even though people call the AHL a 'developmental league', I still say that building an AHL championship team is the only path to a Stanley Cup in the NHL. Bad trade....

Well, MacDermid is five years younger and has more NHL games at 24 than Westgarth did (21 to 0). In my limited view - I've seen both a little but not a lot - Westgarth is the better facepuncher, but MacDermid is more likely to chip in the very odd goal. Both add grit, if that's all Burke wants.

I'm not great at waivers and who can be sent down without passing them, etc... but do we have to keep this guy up or can we freely send him to Abby?

You're not getting that for Nemisz
