Isn't Grabovski one of those players that Advanced Stats guys are super into? Like Frans Nielsen or Michael Frolik? If I search wordpress blogs for articles about him will somebody try to prove with math that he is really good?
yes last year grabo was played in tough circumstances. Only played other teams top lines and usually started in the defensive zone. Hard to put up points the way he was played.
I would like to see the flames offer him a 2 year deal. Don't care the cap hit is high, as long as the term is short.

I have been chirping about the Flames acquiring Grabovski since about halfway through the season, when it was clear that the coaching staff in Toronto weren't interested in what he had to offer.
Grabovski routinely looks to me like Toronto's best player (not as often as Kessel, but still regularly enough).
He looks money, the advanced stats guys love him, oh, and he produces as much as any center Calgary has had in 20 years.
I would be happy enough if Feaster claimed him off waivers on his current contract. He'll get very close to his current deal on the UFA market.

I too am a big fan of him coming to Calgary and I've watched him enough to know that he is a very under-rated player and his point totals don't show the type of player he is...if the price is right then I say go for it!

Grab in a Flames uniform and picking him for nothing, would make the Dion trade seem so long a go. Grabs would be a great pickup, he has a lot of heart. Coach him the right way and the return could be huge.
Being in TO I watch a lot of Leaf games and he is one of their better players. Not enough respect is given to his game.
Grabovski, a creative playmaker and good skater who can play center and the wing, is a close friend of Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk, whom he idolizes. They played on the same line for CSKA Moscow during the NHL lockout this season.
The Red Wings will be seeking a second-line center when free agency begins Friday at noon, if, as expected, they're not able to re-sign Valtteri Filppula.
LeBrun was on team1040 and said the Leafs were trying to trade Grabo and would pay up to half his cap hit. Also said it was a mistake to sign him but Leafs panicked over their C depth and overpaid.
Based on the Leafs offering him for half price and us not taking a bite, doubt he will be wearing the Flaming C, which is the right call IMHO.

Well he's likely to sign with someone, but I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean an NHL team.
Still, Grabovski at half-price means a 2.75M cap hit for Leafs for the next 4 years and Toronto still needs to pay him 11M over that time. A buy-out costs them 14M over the next 8 years. Financially that's not too different but they don't have a cap-hit going with the buyout. It would make sense then that if they were willing to trade Grabovski at half-price, they wanted something in return.
A team looking for a 2nd line center could do a lot worse than Grabovski at half of his current contract in my opinion. At least based on skill, locker-room and off ice antics (like being arrested) would be discouraging. Still, I wouldn't lose my #### if he was brought in by Feaster on a reasonable deal.

I'm sure the Leafs wanted something in return if they were going to eat salary.
Also -
Grabovski has scored more goals than Kopitar, Richards, Duchene, Datsyuk, Lecavalier, Berglund, Bergeron, Seguin, Eberle over last 3 yrs.
Whoever signs Grabbo will be very happy. Most Leaf fans loved him despite his brutal season last year. But that was mostly Carlyle's fault. If you watched the first round, that is the kind of player he is regularly..not afraid of getting hit, fast, and has offensive creativity.
If the Leafs take this money and sign Bozak or overpay for Clarkson I don't see the point of this move. The only way this makes sense is if the Leafs have a trade lined up for a real 1st line centre and they needed the cap space. Any other move in my opinion is one step forward, two steps back.

I don't want him here. We have enough guys and we need to give the guys we have a chance. I think giving Backlund and Knight loads of time would be a good idea at least at the beginning of the season and see how it goes.

I agree that it would be great to give them time, but it is also great to have them play in their range. I am one of the posters that is really high on Backlund, and feel he should be the top line center on this team this season. However, it is also unfair to place him in that situation and have him try to compete against top lines all the time.
To me, Grabovski is a guy you could throw on the top line to do some heavy lifting for a while, but not someone you make long term plans around. I would prefer Grabo, Riberio (yuck, did I just say that?), Weis, even Roy to play some harder minutes on the top line. I don't want another guy who has peaked in the 2B - 3A type of center. A decent second liner who the Flames can play a bit over his head on the first line, while allowing the other centers to 'grow' a bit into their roles.
