If we want to swing for the fences, I say pick Petan. Although a different type of risk (size vs Russian), he's still a risk

Petan with what pick? I wouldn't mind a shot on him with the Penguins' pick but depending on who's available (and of course where it lands) I think I wouldn't want to see the Blues' pick used on him.
But go for both, a Nichushkin-Petan-Gaudreau line would be hilarious.
Or grab Gauthier and make Gaudreau really look small.

A top 5 talent falling past 20 I think would require several GM's to lose their jobs. Maybe the Pittsburgh+St.Louis pick could be used to move up enough to grab him if he still falls pretty heavily into that early teen area.

Yup, thats why I specified wherever the 2nd pick may be, as it'd likely require us to move up.

Either the Blues or Pens pick. Obviously not ours
There is a minimal difference between the Blues and Pens picks. Right now, they're 25 and 29
You'd take a risk with Petan at 29 but not 25? Those four spots really mean that much?

Some people are saying on HF that Nashville is high on Lindholm and if it's true that Carolina is high on Monahan then that gives us Sasha Bakrov....I would LOVE it if that happened.

Blues' would be 23 (behind Boston and then the 6 division winners). And there's probably about as good of a chance that it falls below that as there is of it climbing above. So yeah, if the Blues' pick ends up in that 21-23 range I think I would avoid Petan.
Of course if it climbs up to 27 or better there's very little difference between the picks.

Bleacher Report's mock draft has Calgary taking Lindholm, after Nichushkin goes 5th. They have Monahan going 10th to Dallas.

Draft Pick

I can't say I'm educated enough to make any sort of prediction, but I think Feaster picks Monahan. For whatever reason, I think the fourth franchise player Feaster was talking about is him. Size, faceoffs, offensive talent, leadership, physicality, and not to mention high hockey IQ which he loves. Never mind the fact he's Canadian. As for my preference, I need to do more reading, and personal scouting to make an informed choice. Either way I think we will come away with a great player.

Gormley right behind him. Couturier falling to 8th, Forsberg making his way to 11th last year. I would say those would have been about as surprising as Barkov would be available at 6th this year. All it would take is a team being confident Nichushkin is making his way over to the NA and another team deciding they need a defender like Nurse or something.

What made him great was he finished his career averaging almost 1 penalty minute per game, raising that to over 1 during the playoffs.

I feel sorry for whomever we draft 6th overall. There is going to be intense pressure from the fans and media to live up to the hype that will be expected from him. I just hope he has the mental toughness to ride it out.

Agreed. Another reason why I would want to keep all 3 first rounders or keep 2 of at least 3 (package them together to move up). Spread the pressure over multiple first rounders.

I am going to stick with my initial preference from last week
Sean Monahan is the guy no question about it.

Monahan is who i like the most of the above. 2nd year player Gold medal with under 17's. 31g 78 pts with the below average 67's. Leads all his team mates by an impressive 30pts so he is the guy leading by example and not benefiting from have a good set up man or another finisher.

If I had to guess based on reports, I'd say that Nichushkin goes before Monahan and that he'll be higher on the Flames' list as well. McKenzie says that him being Russian is the only reason the top-4 isn't a top-5. I suspect the Flames will pick Lindholm.

Why is having more PIMs a good thing?
I find it very odd that so many posters put PIMs on a pedestal.
I want my stars on the ice. Not in the penalty box.
