If the Giants make the World Series, they earned home field by this game.

Cain, Sandoval, Cabrera and Posey were excellent.

It still is awful they award home field for the World Series this way though. You'd think the 162 games each team plays in the regular season would count for that instead of one game where the best of the best are out of the game by the half way mark. Maybe not this year, but there is the possibility that one league could win the game based on the heroics of one player, who could end up in the other league via a trade and be on the team with the best record, but not have home field advantage.

Detroit will win that division when it's all said and done. It's a poor division and they've had early season struggles. But their stars will come through in September.

Kudos on your optimism. If only there weren't at least 6 other AL teams better then them, I'd tend to agree

There might well be 6 AL teams better than them but not in that division. So 3 of those better 6 teams won't even make the playoffs.

Well the format of all-star game winner hosts the world series is better than the old one of alternating the host league every year regardless of record.

The Giants were gigantic.

I have no problem with home field being decided this way. Since teams don't play balanced schedules, comparing best records is apples and oranges.

Not balanced still, but I think best league record in interleague play would be better than the allstar game for who gets homefield advantage.

Fair point. It's similar to the President's Cup winner usually being in a weak division and getting the 1st overall seed based on beaten a bunch of bad teams throughout the year that they get to play more often than other teams get to play them. I guess it shouldn't be a shock how often they get knocked out early.

I like this idea too. The only thing that would bother me is if the team that advanced the the WS had a terrible interleague record and only received home field because of the rest of the league. I guess it's not much different than Cubs getting homefield when their two guys went 0-2 in the All Star game.

The best thing I like about home field being decided early is the playoff schedule is easy to figure out. For people like me who want to travel and see, we can book hotels and flights early if we choose and save some money.

I used to be of this mindset. I'm not a fan of unbalanced schedules, but that's a different debate.

Looking at this year's all star game, Verlander didn't pitch well. Bautista didn't defend against the triples.

I'm not putting the loss on those two individually. It's still a team game.

However, let's take Verlander for example, it was 5-0 after the top of the 1st inning. That's tough to come back against, let alone having to do that against a team full of all stars.

So now if LAA, TEX, CWS, NYY, TB or anyone but Detroit comes out of the AL no matter how well they played all season, no matter who comes out of the NL (could be the 2nd wildcard) they don't get home field advantage.

Should the 2nd wildcard of the NL get home field because Verlander pitched a bad game?

If all the players were at their best, or perhaps if it was an all-star series, then the bad game/bad plays would balance out.

Looking at last year's World Series, home field played a huge role in the outcome.

A one off game where players who aren't in your organization determine if you get home field or not?

I used to like it, heck even up until this year's game I said I liked it. Now, now I've changed my mind.

That said, if you still like it, all the power to you. I used to be like you. I won't hold it against you (I'd appreciate the same curtsy as at the end of the day we don't made these decisions... not that I mean you specifically troutman).

Just my two cents.

Here's my stupid observation for today. Why do Umpires wear black? Could there be any worse colour to wear during Sunday afternoon games in the middle of the summer?

If the home team isn't wearing white, the umpires should wear white. Or it should be like soccer refs who can wear any colour as long as it doesn't clash with either team's colours.

Umpires normally wear light blue in day games.

Too bad for the Braves. He'd look good in their rotation. Still a possible location for him though

Yankess have acquired Ichiro from the Mariners for minor league pitcher DJ Mitchell and another minor leaguer. Ichiro will replace Brett Gardner who is having season ending elbow surgery

Yankees with Ichiro? Damn. I don't know much about the prospect, but it sounds like the Yankees stole another one.

I might be in the minority here but I'm happy for the Mariners and Ichiro. Ichiro gets a shot at winning a championship, which is always nice to see for a generational talent like him. The Mariners get a couple prospects for someone who is on a sharp decline near the end of his career, i mean at least they got something.

Ichiro is still a stud in the field but his bat is not what it used to be and I doubt he will make much of an impact for the Yankees. Just my $0.02

Ichiro isn't even near to how good he used to be. Wasn't worth keeping around with that salary. Mariners are obviously going in a different direction. Some pretty amazing talent in the system. Should be a great team in a few years.
