He listens to Michael Bolton. But that's okay, Time, Love and Tenderness was lightyears ahead of Someday.

I'm still waiting for hipster haters to pull up any of the posts that say Metric is the best band ever. Apparently there's been so many of them in this thread.

I don't even listen to rock. I just think Nickelback are way better singers than people give them credit for. They are really good singers, but I don't have a single song of theirs on my ipod. I'm not ignorant to music and recognize good talent. Metric IMO are one of the worst bands I've ever heard.

My mentioning of a music degree was in response to a post that insinuated that, only musically dumb and uneducated people have never heard of Metric before. My point was that is not true.

Had nothing to do with implying that my opinion was more valuable than others because of my background. I think I made that clear in my posts...different strokes for different folks.

I'm guessing you don't read before you post. Easier to be a hater...or bitter....or jealous...or whatever your issue is.

Rivers Cuomo has a degree from Harvard. We should all listen to Weezer now!

This whole discussion is basically saying "McDonalds" is horrible and anyone who eats there is a moron. Really? There are Billions of morons that somehow just arent getting it? Wake up. They've come up with a product that is valid for a market.

Is the "All fresh market ingredient" resteraunt better? 9 times out of 10, I'd say yes, but it depends what your looking for at the time. Some days, a Big Mac could be what you really want. That's up to the indivual to say, not me.
McDonald's is popular because they're cheap and fast. Nickelback are popular because people are lazy. People generally just want to be entertained when they listen to music, watch TV/movies, read, etc. They don't want to have to do a lot of thinking when they're getting their entertainment fix, hence why shows like Jersey Shore, The Hills, etc. are so popular. It's also why celebrity gossip mags sell better than something like The Economist.

I'm not saying one is right over the other. It's just a question of priorities and most people just prefer the plug in and shut off mode of entertainment.

Yeah, because that was the first time you've ever brought up your credentials during a music discussion on this site.

Now there's a generalization for ya. It can't be because of the singers, or the sound, or the harmonic structures, or the lyrics.

Brilliant post.

I generally attempt to listen to everything, right now I listen to quite a bit of classical music while studying, when I exercise I listen to more upbeat music including Metric, Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem, The Black Keys. I don't listen to much or any rap or hip hop, I tried to and I appreciate the talent they have and I won't speak bad about the majority of them - granted performers like Eminem somewhat irritate me based on what they say. After that I listen to classic rock while driving, podcasts or CBC radio 2 if I want to hear music.

I seem to only complain about awful uninformed posts, of which you supply a great deal it seems.

Whoever doesn't like this song only doesn't like it because they are lazy!! this is the best singer in the history of the earth.

What a beauty!

And I'm sure those are all great bands and singers. Still doesn't mean that your dislike for Nickelback doesn't make them good singers.

And if my posts bother you so much put me on ignore because all you do is cry and whine in every thread while adding little substance.

Sure, but it's not like Nickelback does any of those things at a particularly high level. For some people it's catchy but you're not seriously going to tell me that is chalk full of complexity and substance.

Nice strawman/red herring, but how about actually debating any of the points I was actually making.

It isn't my cup of tea but I am not going to say that Rita McNeil lacks talent by any stretch of the imagination or that she is horrible or whatever it is you have said about bands like Metric.

Funny I did a quick search and only found two other instances:

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...t=music&page=2
(discussion on this guy who sings real high, not with what kind of music you like)

And the 3pm paper writing marathon thread where I talked about my finals and papers for various topics.

Other than the odd thread on the power ring advertising my services as a teacher, nothing else.

Swing and a miss.

So you never listen to a song unless it has some profound message? I'm not looking for enlightenment during a workout, I'm looking to keep my energy and motivation level up. I wouldn't call it lazy music. It's just triggering a response on a different level.

It's funny too because at no point have I said Nickelback isn't talented. They may the most talented band on the planet, but they don't apply it to their music. All I said is that there's no depth to the band. Nobody is going to stay up until 2 AM discussing the genius of Chad Kroeger.

It was a joke, and I actually do agree with some of your points. People like catchy songs and which is why some pretty bad singers are successful.

Nickelback might not be the bast band ever, but they made some pretty good songs that caught people's attention including mine when I never listen to that type of music.

Still doesn't make Metric good though IMO.
