Thanks, DESS. You're definitely making the roads safer by causing road rage. Thanks for alerting us to just another example of your self righteous selfishness. Kill bears because they scare you. Outlaw dogs because you never had a puppy as a child. Stop serving alcohol at the Stampede to promote godliness. And drive slow in the left lane to aggravate people that are capable of going a bit faster than that. You are truly noble.

Interesting and short article about the Autobahn.
Quote:
Autobahn Turns 75, Reveals Cultural Differences in Safety
By Marty Jerome
The Nazis wanted everyone to believe that they invented it (not true). American libertarian drivers would have you believe it's safer than U.S. freeways (likewise false). The German Autobahn opened on August 6, 1932, a small spit of about 12.5 miles between Cologne and Bonn. Since then, it has been one of the most important testing grounds for automakers in the world. It's not just for the lack of speed limits that this infamous highway is known. It reveals great cultural differences in the ways that car safety is perceived.
After you crest one blind hill into Frankfurt, for example, the skid marks are akin to those you'd find on a runway at JFK airport, from cars confronting backed-up traffic. This is at least one reason BMW and Mercedes Benz began work on one of the first anti-lock brake systems. American automakers and regulators, by contrast, tend to be fatalistic, focusing on reducing death and injury rather than preventing them. Even the "Wall Street Journal" recently griped that mandatory fuel mileage standards would force vehicles to lose weight, which would result in rising highway death tolls.
The "Journal" failed to note that you're more than four times as likely to be involved in an accident in the first place while driving a 4,000 pound SUV as you would be driving a vehicle weighing 1,000 pounds less with a lower center of gravity.
The left lane of the Autobahn is strictly for passing. To wander into it, cell phone in hand, without a clear sense of your car's dimensions and capabilities is to risk suicide from approaching vehicles. The Autobahn demands a driver's engagement with the road. While Americans constantly bemoan our dumbed-down highways by comparison, we seem unwilling to raise the IQ of our cars or the standards for our drivers.

You can't possibly believe that is true. 100% legal doesn't always mean 100% safe, or 100% correct.
Please explain to me how going 100 kph in the left lane is safe when you have other vehicles in this lane going in excess of those speeds being forced to go around you. Don't you think it would be safer if you just moved over to one of the other lanes, where traffic is moving at your pace?
And don't give me the "well, the person going faster than me is breaking the rules!!!" bit. What's important is that traffic move in a manner that is safe for everyone. That "slower traffic keep right" sign doesn't mean "if you are driving below the speed limit, keep right" - it means exactly what it says it means... that means if you are going 100kph and a guy going 120kph is coming up behind you, then you need to move to the right to let him by. It's safer for him and it's safer for you and everyone else on the road.
At the end of the day, is it really a big deal for you to move over a lane? The only reason I can think of that a person might not move over is that they get some sort of sick pleasure out of forcing the person behind them to drive their speed and use "it's the rules" as justification.

The only other time I can think of where moving over shouldn't be necessary is when there is high volume of traffic. When you're in the left lane and there are 5 cars ahead of you, there's no point to moving over.
When you're in the left lane and the lane is clear sailing in front of you and you're going 100 next to the only other guy going 100, you're just being an a-hole. I can't stand people that are a-holes just because they can. What a pathetic attitude to have. Screw you, DESS.

Look, I completely agree that people going under the speed limit should not be in the left lane. In fact, they shouldn't be on Deerfoot at all. They completely annoy me. If everybody went 100 km/h Deerfoot would be a kick-ass road.
Have you guys every been stuck in a slow-moving chunk of Deerfoot only to have traffic start to thin out to the point where you can get moving again? And then you see a bunch of people toodling along at like 80 km/h for no reason. These people are complete morons that should be banned from driving forever. People doing 100 km/h in the left lane are NOT the problem with Deerfoot being congested. The problem is with people going significantly under the speed limit for no good reason in any lane.
I would love to nail the speeders as well as anybody going under I don't know say 95 km/h with these cameras.

Hopping on the ole' anti-Dess bandwagon, eh? I suppose I'm trolling because I don't like speeding now? You sir, are an idiot.
Interesting that a quick Google search of "speed kills" netted me 1,270,000 results. But yes, I'm alone in thinking people shouldn't speed on Deerfoot.

Sooo, I guess I'm not alone in thinking people should stop being stupid?

Don't give him any ideas! Next thing you know exterminating speeders will be on his list.

I completely agree, I hate it when two people are driving at the exact same speed right next to each other on a two lane road. ONE OF YOU MOVE YOU IDIOTS!! I don't give a rats arse what the speed limit is and if your doing it, it is common knowledge that the left lane is the fast lane, made for people going faster than the speed limit. It is a "fake law" among drivers. Smart drivers know this, idiots/nobles may know this, or may not. If you understand this and choose to be "noble" or just a jerk off/a-hole.
Speed cameras on deerfoot is an awful idea. Speed doesn't kill, idiot drivers who shouldn't have their licenses kill.
