Speed Cameras on Deerfoot Gaining Support

"Second to that, the cameras will have some effect, I believe."
The recommendation for speed cameras is just one of a number of suggestions contained in a draft of the Deerfoot safety audit's final phase.

Lol. It'll have the same effect as a stopped police car or a multanova van. Speed, speed, speed, slam on brakes, go 10 under, go 10 under, speed speed speed.
Whatever, It'll catch a few people and that's free money to the CPS I guess. I saw this coming a mile away. It won't be long before there's red light cameras at every intersection and there's speed cameras on every roadside light.

The police state/technology out of control evolution continues. Camera's downtown to monitor activity. Camera's at intersections. Camera's on Deerfoot. Camera's here and there and everywhere. Is there really any doubt that at some point in the future we will be watched stinkin night and day? It's inevitable.
And no not an overreaction to this story because it's just part of an ongoing trend.

I laugh at these sorts of ideas. Anyone living here who takes the deerfoot everyday will know where they are. All it will do is ticket the oblivious and out of towners. I'm already trained to avoid the speed cameras at lights so why not remember a couple on the road. Besides I'm sure there will be a massive white sign warning of speed camera ahead.

it'll be offset by the non-signalling crackers in the middle of texting and talking on their cell-phones.

Reason: I was wrong, should have been the self-righteous folk in the left lane.

Won't be long until they just put a chip in your car when you buy it, then ticket you automatically every time you exceed the speed limit.

Ald. Ric McIver, whose ward is in southeast Calgary, said he'd like to give the cameras a test run for about a year.
"It's definitely a cash grab, we shouldn't shy away from it,"he said. "The real question is:does it improve safety? If it improves safety, the cash grab should be forgiven."

At least it's not your typical political answer from McIver

Doesn't this already exist with several rental agencies using GPS transponders? I thought for sure they were doing this in California or something.

Yes it does exist and you can bet in the future they will be in company cars, city vehicles and on and on. All kinds of security technology exists and will IMO migrate more and more to being a standard part of life. For example to enter a school coupled with the standard metal detector will be face recognition tech, or fingerprint recognition etc. Justification will be a few more shooting incidents.
To start up your vehicle you need recognition security, then drug/alchohol testing and wherever you go is recorded(for use by the police and for companies to know your spending habits).
I don't see an end to this slope.

Why don't we just eliminate all speeders?

No kidding. Between this and other tracking devices such as those parking stalls that you have to enter your license plate, it seriously won't be long until you can be tracked from the moment you leave your house.
I guess if you're not doing anything wrong, you shouldn't be too worried but I still don't like it. It's like having a friggin stalker.

I read that article this morning and loved one of the comments left.
Quote:
You think speed camera's are right and will pay for them selves, then lets try something else first. Lets put the camera's up and one month we target speeders and the next we target the people who merge onto deerfoot at 60 km/h when everybody is doing 100 km/h. Also should catch those doing 100 km/h or less in the left lane and not allowing anybody to pass. I bet with those two the first month would make more money then the speed camera's. Honestly speed is not the killer, if people would learn to merge with traffic and be curtious with the left lane we would have less accidents and safer roads.
|
Would the object of these cameras be to catch speeders and make money, or to reduce the amount of accidents and make the road safer? If it is to make money, then great - that's all it will do. If they want to reduce the amount of accidents, then I suggest the cameras be used in the fashion as quoted above.
How about CPS patrol Deerfoot and spot the scared sheetless drivers that are merging incorrectly, holding up all traffic by driving too slow, (in whatever lane), panic braking for no reason....how about that?
Sure, some guy driving 150-160 at 3am and plowing into the median doesn't meet the above criteria, but you could almost guarantee that the largest amount of accidents on Deerfoot are NOT caused by speeders.
