This isn't about what you can fathom.
Big trades don't always happen during the draft. Chris Friggin Pronger in his prime got traded twice and neither time was at a draft.

Not sure what you are getting at with the #4. The #4 is only relevant today because Treliving likely wants to use it to move to #3 and get a better prospect.
After #4 is drafted, it's back to the drawing board. But the trade is still a possibility. Of course the Oilers can pursue other dmen.

The value is not based on Hamilton himself, its based on the needs of the two trading parties, their relationships to each other, the timing, what the trading partner has the ability to trade etc..

Hamilton for the #4 OA really only helps the Oilers. The player available at #4 is not projected to be much (if at all) better than the player at #6. So you make a trade for a pick that really holds no value to your franchise, while giving up a player that you need. As soon as we trade Hamilton, we now need a player exactly like him. So you can take the risk that one of the players you choose at #4 or #6 becomes what he is, or you can just keep him and pick at #6 and not help your biggest rival acquire exactly what they need.

I think you're really overvaluing #4. Like, big time.
We can agree or disagree about Hamiltons value. Fine with me, that's a discussion and I had no issues with it.

But you guys jumped on me because of the "clock" comment.
And I stand by it.
If the goals are a #1 dman for Oilers and #3 for Flames then the Oilers don't have to trade for Hamilton any more than Treliving has to complete his move before 5-ish. Is that not correct? So do we really hold all the cards that only a fleecing is acceptable?

This is beside the point that Chairelli is not going to risk his job and reputation by making a questionable deal with the Flames of all teams.

Yeah but it's contingent on how bad each team needs those things. The Oilers absolutely NEED a #1 Dman at least as good Hamilton (in fact they need 2 or 3 of them), and they need him yesterday. The Flames, I think anyways, are in a position of "#3 would be nice, but not necessary." So they are not going to trade necessary pieces from their team for something that isn't all that important.

There are more options for the Flames getting a top 6 winger in different ways than there is for the Oilers to land top-pairing dmen. (Lucic, Hartnell, Okposo, etc..)

Plus, if #3 is the goal, why wouldn't you go straight to CBJ? Why give up one of your best players, to a hated rival, along the way? it assumes you need both #4 and #6 to move up to #3. Which is, IMO, too much to pay for #3, even if you held those picks without giving up Hamilton.

I do not see Dougie being traded for the #4 pick, someone is pulling an eklund in here.

I hear way more Edmonton media than I care to. But the Oilers priority isn't so much a number one stud defenseman as much as it is a Right handed shooting one that could play on a top pair.

They desperately need a right handed shooting guy who can fit in the top 4, as they still believe that between Klefbom, Nurse, and Sekera that they have top 4 guys. But they lack a guy who can play the right side effectively, and add offence from that side with that grouping.

The Oilers may be willing to add one of those guys to get a true top pair upgrade in a different deal. But the feeling I get is that they want to see if the number 4 pick and one of their forwards preferably RNH can be used to bring in that right handed shooting top pair guy. Which is why I think Subban is a guy they'd go really hard after, but if that door also closes, than they need to start looking anywhere and everywhere.

Regarding Dougie Hamilton, on TSN 1040 Matt Sekeres is talking to Pierre McGuire who said he saw Hamilton yesterday in Buffalo and McGuire says he has never seen Hamilton as fit as he looks right now.
