I think the issue is that 90% of the time rentals don't really pay off, and that isn't new just this season either.
I can't really recall a rental that truly pays dividends for a team and often it is better for the team selling (Forsberg for Erat anyone?

Stall has been poor, Ladd has been average, Stempniak didn't work out for the Bruins, Boedker was no good for the Avs, Versteeg and the Kings are out, and the list goes on.
Really the best two moves have likely been McGinn & Russell. May throw Polak and Weise in there too.
It's less of a Calgary Flames problem, and more of a maybe we should get a rental at all problem.
