The hole plays a maximum of 137 yards. Even players with a 20 or 30 handicap believe they should be able to put the ball on the green from that distance. So to see guys who can do miraculous things on the course struggling with a shot almost anyone can do (or so it feels like when watching), it really makes it interesting.
Especially when, as anyone who has ever shot for an island green knows, for some reason you tend to grip the club a little bit tighter, and the heart beats a little bit louder, and every action feels a little bit more alien.
Which local courses have island greens? I can think of Rivers Edge and Kananaskis.

The Rivers edge one is more difficult than you think as well. Ive only played there once, but I rolled off the back on what I thought was a great shot. Quite a bit longer than 17 at sawgrass if I recall?
#6 at kananaskis mt kidd is pretty huge and not as difficult.
Black mountain in kelowna has a par 4 island green.
And it might be at a muni, but #1 at shag is pretty interesting- 250 yd par 4 on an island green. Kind of silly as a par 4, but I honestly think it would be one of the best par 3's around. It is too long and not enough of an elevated tee to be a par 3, but man that would be tough. Almost impossible to hold the green off the tee right now, but they could change that easily enough.
