Glenbow planning major public art gallery
Relating from the discussion of culture of Calgary and bridges, this was also announced today!
about time. Calgary is the only major city in Canada without a public gallery. It will fill a huge hole in the cultural fabric of the city.
Quote:
The Glenbow Museum is preparing to pitch a landmark, international-calibre art gallery to city politicians that backers say would fill a gaping hole in Calgary's arts scene.
The gallery, being championed by the Calgary Arts Development Authority, would rival other Canadian institutions and give Calgary the space to attract global exhibitions that supporters say currently bypass our city.
|
Quote:
The proposal is expected to be unveiled next month at a city meeting, where it will be one of the authority's 17 suggestions for spending $165 million in provincial funding the city earmarked for cultural initiatives.

They mention they haven't selected location, but they considering both downtown and suburban locations. Personally, an institution like this needs to be central - near LRT infrastructure and other cultural and tourist attractions, and hotels!
The perfect location in my mind would be the Louise Crossing site at 4th ave and 8th street SW - right on the city-owned land on the Bow river.

AHAHAHA... spit up my lunch, thanks fotze...
Combine this project with the reconstruction of the Science Centre, the possibility of getting the Portrait Gallery... and there's some exciting times ahead for this city culturally-wise.

Muta since you seem to know this sort of thing, where do the following centers follow for art:
Toronto
Boston
Chicago
San Jose
Do you see the simple culture of Calgary taking in art?

Anything that encourages cultural development in a city is a good thing.

Good news for the city. More culture and more reasons to keep people downtown the better.

Do you mean, how do I rank them?
I'm not necessarily an art fan, as I am a fan of architecture and design overall. Art, I know some, but I just want to clarify what you asked me.

I guess I was just wondering how important art/culture is to a city. I think infrastructure (good infrastructure, fancy stuff) and roads/transportation are key, but how often are art museums visited if they arn't world clas?
Down here in SJ (probably the highest concentration of degree's / PhDs in North America, if not the world) infrastructure has allowed Google to move into SGI's building (i.e. Googleplex in Mountain View), I believe eBay moved into someone's building, the SJ Convention Center which is conviniently downtown holding huge convensions like NVision (Nvidia), Photonics West and so on.
For Art, I know that is more of a San Fransico thing (1 hr away). I don't know how priminant it is in SJ or the South Bay area.
I see alot of similiarities between Calgary and San Jose and was wondering if you had any idea about the art scene (if any) in SJ and how it might help SJ.

This has been developing for quite some time. Might include moving the museum too in a campus style setting like the Getty.

Of course. Calgarians do participate culturally in all sorts of activities, like the Maclean's survey said.
They used to say the same thing when Calgary introduced LRT. "who the hell is going to ride that in car-oriented calgary? It's got the highest ridership in North America for such a system! Higher than Vancouver, which has double the population!
Calgary's (stereotyped) reputation, in most cases, does not very closely match its reality.

That's quite the easy feat when you have a large and growing population and little to no LRT cabs... ridership will no doubt be at 100%!

The proposal coming coming from the glenbow really isn't surprising considering how it's an area where we are lacking and the Glenbow's new CEO has a very strong art background. I was surprised when I heard how much art had been given to the Glenbow because of our new CEO. Those pieces definitely need a place to go. The Glenbow's new exhibit is doing its best to show it all off, but it's still just a fraction of what we have.

haha, I love it. There definitely needs to be more smoke-blowing-tractor-pulling culture in this town.

I think that museum would draw many more locals than one might think on first reflection. People here aren't such philistines as is the common view, and a decent art museum would bring that out.
