Still want to re-sign him until someone offers treliving something he can't turn down. Or at least we can hope.

I hope that's just some attempt to drive up the cost or something.

That could also be a ploy to try and up his trade value. Might not see a deal until the trade deadline though.

If he's getting league interest, we really should be trading him.

I'm surprised there is any interest for him. If we get multiple bidders, maybe we could even get something really nice.

Good news - there is a market for him

Bad news - the fact that there is a market for him probably makes it harder to sign him for cheap

Still a good player and would be happy to have him back as a leader at the right price

Please no. Trade him if he has any value at all.

Really? Come on now.

I'm not a huge Russell fan but depth defensemen, quality depth defensemen are always a want at deadline day. Russell is a great #5 guy, capable of jumping into the top four in short spurts too. He's not great, but guys like that are quality needs for teams hoping for an extended playoff push.

Yeah, Treliving is hopefully driving up the price.

He fits here if the price is right. We can't pay him to be a top 4 guy, but if he takes a bit of a hometown discount I think we can have a nice spot for him as a heart and soul #5 guy.

If he doesn't wanna do that then I think we might have to deal him at the deadline.

Russell as a #5 is great IMO.

Wideman is the Dman we need to part ways with, and ideally one of Smid or Engelland.

I don't have a problem with this. Long term Russell could be a good piece to fill out a lineup for several years. Fact is, we don't have many defense prospects who are close to playing up to Russell's current level. Seeing Wideman regress, and knowing that Smid and Engelland are no better than 6/7 d-men going forward, there will be a serious gap after next season. All 3 are done after next year, and I would be surprised to see any of them re-signed. Besides which, none of them are good enough for the 2nd pairing. I would say that Russell is at least a decent #4 d-man and is still young enough that he will be able to contribute at that level for several years.

Consider that our d-prospects mostly project to being bottom pair d-men. Kylington and Andersson project higher, but are a long way from the NHL. We need someone who has the capabilities of a 2nd pairing d-man for at least 2 more years, and Russell is a hometown boy who will likely take a slightly lower salary to stay in Alberta. It's not the worst plan ever.
