Default Kevin Allen: Wheeling and dealing likely on NHL draft day

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...tlook/9336765/

Quote:
"Some teams are going to be looking to move some salaries, and I just have a feeling there could be a lot of moves," Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill said.
Quote:
Tallon said he isn't ruling out anything, including taking a player at No. 1, accepting a deal to move back in the draft or packaging his No. 1 and other assets in an effort to acquire a top player.

"When I look at my team, I would like to add a couple of top-notch veteran (defenders)," Tallon said.
Quote:
"This draft does set up where I could make the statement that we may see more movement in the top end of the draft than maybe we have seen in the last few years," Flames general manager Brad Treliving said.
Quote:
"I think there is probably a consensus on the top five, but I think there might be 30 different lists of what order," Treliving said.

Treliving's boss, Brian Burke, has a long history of making big splashes on draft days. He secured the Sedin twins through draft-day trades when he was in Vancouver and also maneuvered on draft day to land Chris Pronger for the Hartford Whalers.

All Treliving knows for sure is that he is likely to pick early in the draft, even if he does make a move.

"We are not moving young assets, whether they are picks or players, for short-term relief," Treliving said. "We are going to make sure we are thinking long term."

This makes me very happy.

^Maybe this comment will stall the agonizing, back and forth, trade Sven discussions...

I agree that statement made me quite happy as well

The trade Sven discussions can still happen as long as they are for something more than short term relief.

A Baertschi for Meyers deal is still an option as Meyers can help the team in the long term.

That would actually be talking down the value of his 1st overall.

Nope. The "depth" of a draft is not determined by the top pick(s) but by how quickly the talent drops off after the top end. Tallon's statement references picks 5 and on IMO

How is that talking up his asset? He has the 1st pick. If he was saying their was a talent dropoff after whatever pick, that would be talking up his asset. If anything, he's devaluing it by saying that you can probably still get a good player with a slightly later pick.

Refreshing to actually hear a GM say normal, non-inflammatory statements. You get a pretty clear sense of exactly what the organizational goals are.

On draft day, I'd love for us to end up with the first overall and Myers. It would be amazing if we. Iuod end up with those two assets and keep our pick…

Dare to dream boys and girls!

So it sounds like Florida is liking Nylander and Edmonton likes Draisaitl, if so that would be great. We would get 1 of my top 3 players"

Florida would not take him number one they would trade down. Ekblad would not make it past Edmonton. They like Draisaitl because the consensus is Ekblad would be off the board by the 3rd pick. I would still assume those will be the top three picks.

Not only that but he is weakening his trade position. If he trades down to a 6-15 pick he is admitting that pick has considerable value and he will still likely get a good player.

He's "talking it up" in the sense that some (media) think that the top prospects this year aren't as good as last year or next year. There's no generational talent that has emerged from this crop.

By saying this, Tallon is hoping some GM's who wouldn't trade assets to move up in an average draft rethink their philosophy and think about maybe trading for his #1.

It's useless IMHO as the only people who would have interest in this chitter chatter are the media and observers like us. People in the game (ie. GM's, scouts, etc...) know what kind of draft pool this is and don't need the opinion of one GM to determine if it's a good or bad draft. They already know.

This is an exciting draft. The flames have more cap space and prospects than they have had in a while. If a top young player on a cap or budget team is on the block Calgary has a chance to put a good package together.

A lot of people are saying that Ekblad wouldn't get past the Oilers, but the Oilers themselves have told the media that defensemen is their organizational strength with regards to prospects. I know MacTavish is on record saying he likes Ekblad but I can't see them passing on Draisaitl if available. The Oilers desperately need a big center.

Ok, they have Nurse who's still not ready physically and Klefbom who so far doesn't look all that great(Granlund make him look stupid three times in one game)...who else do the have on D?
