Stay safe Canmore, and other towns along the smaller rivers in the foothills.

Parts of Black Diamond have been evacuated, as have houses near Cougar Creek in Canmore.

The Sheep river (Okotoks) has been upgraded to a flood warning from flood watch. The Highwood River is still on flood watch, as the Elbow river above Glenmore dam. Most of the other rivers are on high streamflow advisories.

Several communities in Southern Alberta are under a state of emergency after recent rainfall, forcing evacuations over worries of flooding.

Town of Canmore in State of Emergency

The Town of Canmore has declared a local state of emergency after a deluge of rain.

Officials say the banks at Cougar Creek are unstable, and residents are being warned to stay away from it and all bodies of water.

Residents south of the pedestrian bridge over Cougar Creek are being evacuated, while other are being notified they should prepare for a possible evacuation.

Access to Eagle Terrace is closed and power is out at various locations throughout town.
Three Sisters Parkway is closed.

Schools in Canmore will be open on Thursday but there will be no classes and no school buses are running – as the town deals with dangerously high water levels.

The Trans-Canada Highway is closed at Cougar creek eastbound – and at Highway 40 at Exshaw for westbound travel.

The 1A Highway is closed both East and Westbound at Cougar Creek.

Canmore is located about 100 kilometers west of Calgary, Alberta.

Highway 1 westbound closed at highway 40

Highway 1A 1km east of Exshaw road washed out

High River declares a state of emergency

The Town of High River has declared a state of emergency due to concerns over flooding. The Highwood River is rising quickly and is overflowing its banks in areas of town.

Emergency staff are encouraging residents in the Wallaceville area to leave their homes and campers in George Lane Park are being told to leave.

The Emergency Operations Centre is now open and crews have been called in and sandbagging efforts are underway.

Updates will be provided as soon as they become available on the town’s website highriver.ca

Black Diamond residents forced from homes due to flooding

Some residents in Black Diamond have been asked to leave their homes and head for a reception centre, as the town is now under a critical alert for flooding.

Officials say there is an increasing amount of water traveling across land, leading to flooding.
The flooding begins near the Foothills Lions Campground, where Highway 22 has been closed.

Residents west of 1st Street S.W. are being asked to evacuate to a reception centre located at the Oilfields Regional Arena. Door to door notification of the evacuation is currently taking place.

Power outages are expected to follow.

Officials warn residents of Black Diamond to prepare for possible evacuation, and to avoid rivers, valleys and low lying areas.

Black Diamond is located about 70 kilometers southwest of Calgary.

I am the only person not surprised that a town called High River experiences flooding every year?

Flood warnings as of 8:45 am.

Everything in the Bow river basin is now at least at Flood watch. Highwood, Sheep, Elbow above the dam, and Bow river tributaries are at at Flood Warning level.

Man, having flashbacks to spending my last summer down in Okotoks back in 05. A few days just out in the rain, helping sandbag and dry things out where I could.

Everytime we get a few days of rain, I use the words "F-Off Rain" http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=11526

I wonder what our threat is like in the city. Curious if the reservoirs have been dropped enough (during spring) to counter act this deluge. My guess would be yes they have, but this is definitely an outlying storm.

Ugh. It's amazing when you see Cougar Creek in August and it's just a trickle with some small pools of water. I consider Canmore a second home town. Hopefully everything works out ok.

I'm actually somewhat surprised at this, seems like here in the city we haven't seen that much precipitation. I mean 2 weeks ago we got a few straight days of 30mm+ and things weren't this bad...

Hmm, this should bode well for our bachelor-party rafting trip this Saturday.

So since we are downstream of all the fun stuff happening in Canmore right now, when does that hit us? Or how much can be minimized with the damns between us and them?

High water level, fast moving current, and intoxicated boaters. What could go wrong?

Hey it's not a good stag unless there is at least one death (usually supposed to be the stripper though...).
