The stories coming out about Meurello and how his franchise was being run are despicable.
I'm sure the NHL has no actual intent of allowing him to get another team. They're just pandering to him to get the team away from him and then they'll punt him to the curb.

Honestly I do not understand that. You already paid for it. Your team is moving. You dont want it and the guy is already there.
Wouldnt it make more sense to just give it to him? And if he wants to trash it thats his business but to just toss it in a dumpster out back? Give me a break.
I dislike using the term 'classless' because that would presume to make me some arbiter of 'class' but this incident seems pretty objective.

Is this more on the arena than the Coyotes? Once kicked out of the arena the Coyotes may not have had a chance to retrieve the banners. The relationship between Glendale City and the Coyotes was very toxic.
I do agree the Coyotes did not seem to every have a decent owner.

They did what they had to do to get the franchise away from him as he had some leverage.
He’s not going to be building an arena with his own money, that was always a fantasy.

To a lesser extent, it's similar to the Oakland A's (obviously Yotes have never had the same amount of support as the A's).
After a while, after all the skimping and stadium drama, people just stopped caring.

Organization failure is nearly always top down though and the owner stands at the top. Sometimes a good owner hires the wrong people but when it's a trend of hiring the wrong people, then it's an ownership issue.

I think anyone would be crazy to spend a lot of their own money on an arena there. You can get into the granular details about why they didn't have a strong following, but it is what it is now. Building a new arena is far from a guarantee that things would turn around the franchise and it still would have had a big risk of being a failing venture.

The arena gave the Coyotes a chance to get the banner.

It still seems kind of callous to just huck it in a dumpster like it had negative value for them to hold on to it. Not like it would take up a tonne of space.
I am not removing blame from the crappy owner (7 different owners in 28 years btw which is crazy). But there seems to have been resentment and disinterest for that franchise at many different levels even predating the current owner.

Let's not forget that Meurelo or whatever you spell it, was the last owner in a long long line of bad owners. Let's not forget that the NHL owned the team for a good chunk of their existence. The failure of ARZ Coyotes has been 28 years of life support.
The only reason it had any fanbase whatsoever was Bettmans stout refusal to let the pig die.
I suppose we should thank him for it in some way because without ARZ hockey, there's a handful of the league's best players that wouldn't have ever played.

The pig was kept on life support in Arizona to keep it from moving to Vegas or Seattle before the new owners bought expansion franchises.
I believe it's being allowed to move to Utah now because Utah wasn't on the league's list of desirable expansion markets; just as the Thrashers were allowed to move to Winnipeg because the league never had any intention of selling an expansion team there.
Money talks. The difference between a $200 million relocation fee (as reported for Utah) and a $1 billion expansion fee (rumoured for Atlanta and Houston) talks with a really big amplifier.
