+1. I read somewhere (think it was here on CP) that Detroit did not want to include the 1st.
Yup. McGuire is not the first guy to say this about better prospects from Detriot. What he is leaving out also is that St.Louis was the only team that would take on all of JBO's salary.
Still think it was stupid of the flames not to eat some salary. The 2 prospects they got back could have been had for a late round pick each in another deal.

Yeah, eat some salary on Cammi and Jay. Not my money though.
According to Mcguire, Detroit presented a much better offer for JBo than St. Louis. I wonder what it was and if Jay would not waive for Detroit. Not sure what the supposed offer was but interesting nonetheless.
Detroit's probably included a guy who once stood in line at an Orange Julius while Bob Hartley's nephew was also in line, so obviously there's some chemistry there that is a immediate win.

They still leave themselves in a position where at the draft they could move a player, eating some salary, to improve a draft position. Hypothetically, Maybe a scenario comes up where they can send Cammalleri at 3 or 4 million (eat 2 to 3 million) plus the STL pick to move up in the draft.
The salary space itself is going to be huge with it being knocked back to 63 million.

They should have been thinking about eating salary on both JBO and Cammi. They will not be able to trade Cammi unless they eat salary.
As for just JBO deal, Feaster said they could use the money on the rfa market. How much money did they need for a RFA player? I hope they are not thinking about spending $5 million plus on a player that will cost them a 1st and 3rd.

I don't see the ownership being to keen on paying for someone to play somewhere else unless there is benefit. Maybe they didn't think Rattie instead of Berra or Cundari was worth it. If Feaster is at the draft and can trade into the top ten by eating salary I think they would entertain it. I think a pick in the top ten would be more valuable then the potential prospect they would have received in eating some of Bouwmeester's salary.
I think it comes down to what the Flames were looking for. The Flames were obviously looking for a 1st round pick out of the deal after finding out that getting a conditional pick (that might not be a first) for Iginla wasn't exactly a popular deal.
The Red Wings obviously don't want to trade their 1st. Who can blame them? This year will, Cup finals permitting, be the highest they have drafted in how long? Since 2005? Since 1991? They might miss the playoffs this year and they might miss the playoffs next year. The Blues on the other hand have a young core and are looking to take a step forward and become Cup contenders.
But just what exactly did the Red Wings offer? I think LeBrun reported that the Wings packaged involved a 2nd and two prospects. Who are those two prospects? I think that if the team had Iginla and Feaster was still being intellectually dishonest, the Detroit package probably is the right deal. The Red Wings have some prospects who are a step or two below being blue-chip who are close to being NHL ready. A sober Riley Sheahan? Tatar? Jurco? Ferraro? Nyquist? Frk? Jarnkrok? Is Smith still a prospect? I can see how Detroit's package can be seen as better, especially if one of those prospects included is Tatar.
St. Louis's 1st rounder may get us a better prospect than any in Detroit's system. Not to mention the 1st allows more possibilities for trading up/down or away.

I would take the first rounder over any two prospects in the Wings system as I don't see any franchise players and in this draft there could be a few littered in the first two rounds.
Well, deal with it. I wasn't cheering for Canada either way. Nothing worse than arrogant Canadian fans. They'd be lucky to finish 4th. Quote me on that. They have a bad team and that is why I won't be cheering for them.
McGuire is such a chickens#!t... not only does he not name the source (which is fine), but he won't even attach a vague description (senior something or another), and he won't even say what the bloody alternative offer was! At minimum he should have provided details on the offer.
For all we know the source was the Orange Julius guy and the package was guys that nobody on the planet except McGuire likes.
Haven't followed him that closely, but in the couple St-Louis games I've watched since the trade, the St-Louis commentators really talked good about Bouwmeester.
