Its got to be kipper for a second-- look at the trouble we're stilling having filling his shoes. Most important position for essentially peanuts.

The Joey Mullen deal was a real heist too. If you look at what he did as a Flame, only Kent Nilsson produced more per year. Too bad they traded him a couple years too soon.

Lanny McDonald became the face of the franchise when he came over from Colorado. He also has the Flames record for most goals in a season with 66 dingers. Now Kipper is a fine choice but my vote is still with Lanny.

It should be noted that San Jose turned that pick into Vlasik, who has since developed into one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, so not exactly "peanuts".
I'd have to say the biggest fleecing was Langkow for Gauthier and Saprykin. Langkow was never a superstar, but he gave the Flames many solid years. The players the Coyotes acquired in that trade were out of the league within a season or two.

Im gonna say the Mullen deal over the Kiprusoff deal because of one thing
Joe Mullen, Rik Wilson, and Terry Johnson to the Flames for...
Charlie Bourgeois, Gino Cavellini, and Eddy Beers.
A complete fleecing.

Darryl Sutter had the Midas touch that season. He acquired Lynn Loyns, Mikka Kipprusoff, Marcus Nilson, Ville Nieminen and Chris Simon.
He didn't give up a 1st, blue chip prospect or even a roster player.

Can't call the Kipper trade a "fleecing" when the Sharks ended up picking a legit top pair Dman with that pick, and will end up having him for an entire 15 or so year career.
A fleecing implies that you ripped the other GM off, which is not the case with that deal. It was great for both teams, especially since the Sharks were not left wanting for a goalie at any time during Kipper's career.

Lanny McDonald for some reason was our school "mascot" (Southview Elementary, Medicine Hat) and I remember in grade 5 there was an assembly and he showed up and spoke to the school about being a hockey player and life in general. We all got a signed Colorado Rockies photo of him, which I still have. Then in grade 6 after his trade to Calgary, he came again, but I don't think we got a signed photo.
He's a steal by any measure, other than the surprise of Kiprusoff. Lanny had an off season (injury?) and rebounded and put up career numbers with the Flames IIRC.
Kipper on the other hand was the best trade ever, but it was a complete surprise, and not something you can chalk up to experience by the GM. It was a shrewd fluke.
A couple years ago Lanny was in my firm's lobby dropping off something for one of the other lawyers, and I saw him and invited him to my office to see my hanging Flames memorabilia, which he graciously came to see (my bad). I can't believe I forgot to mention to him my Colorado Rockies picture I received from him in grade 5 which I still have (but which does not hang in my office).
My vote is for Lanny but there's some sentimental value there too. And the goal in Montreal in '89... what a way to cap a career!

Was that for Vlasic? How they use the pick doesn't indicate it's value. If we had traded a 1st instead of a second and the 1st busted did we then fleece them? Would that have been a "better" trade because the guy selected busted? Nope.
The Stajan trade was decent. 3rd line c and only gave up a disgruntled locker room cancer d man.

I don't consider Kipper a fleecing because nobody, including Sutter, knew what Kipper would become. A fleecing, in my opinion, is when you get something that is recognised at the time as much higher value than you gave up.
So I'd have to go with Mullen. Spare parts for one of the top wingers in the game who already had two 40 goal seasons under his belt and was just entering his prime.

Kipper for a 2nd was a great trade for us.
For the Sharks, they traded their 3rd string goalie for a 2nd round pick and turned that pick into a 1st pairing Dman, and they've never had a void at the goaltending position due to trading away Kipper.
That trade was not a "fleecing" in any way, shape or form.
It was a solid trade for both teams.

Kipper is easily the biggest fleecing in my time as a Flames fan. Hamilton has the potential to be just as big however.
Another one which comes to mind is Kristian Huselius.

I don't hsve the energy to debate. It depends if you look at it as the whole of the trade (yes you're right) or if you look at "kipper for a 2nd" in a vacuum.

Kipper is the bigger steal but the work to bring in proven NHLers like Gilmour and Mullen is more impressive. Kipper was more easy to acquire. I also like the move to bring in John Tonelli
