Default 5.1 logitech 5500 and me

So, I've picked up a set up the logitech 5500 speakers and am in the process of trying to set it up, i'm aware that they won't process hd-audio or dolby-ma for blu rays, i plan on getting around this using a blu ray player that decodes and outputs discrete signals for each speaker.

the problem i'm having is hooking the speakers up to a simple dvd to get regular dolby digital. When I have the speakers hooked up to my shaw box, channels with digital 5.1 work no problem. However when i try to use the optical output on the dvd to the speaker set, all i'm stuck with is stereo mode and no digital data to the speaker set.

any thoughts on this?
