I think we jump to the nutcase excuse too easily. People can also be really stupid/ill-educated, selfish and even totally evil, without being mentally ill.
No excuse, if you don't want the child get an abortion or put it up for adoption. I hope they charge her with attempted murder, but she'll probably get failure to provide the necessities of life.

If you are going to abandon your child- why not at a fire station or an emergency ward?
Sure- it could have been some scared 15 year old mother who had the baby in the bathtub (not an excuse of course), but surely this wasn't the only option.

I don't think any new mother could be this evil without being mentally ill.
Kids are stupid, selfish and naive about the world. There is a reason people can't vote/drink until they get older.
That said, at some point you really need to face what you have done (had unprotected sex) and deal with the consequences. My bet is this particular girl has never really had to do that and didn't want to start now. I would blame the parents as much as anything.

I don't think we have safe haven laws. If a kid shows up with a baby to a fire department, they can be arrested same as leaving it in the dumpster. In 1999 Texas was the first state to introduce safe haven laws, and now there are only 3 states left WITHOUT a safe haven law. But Canada does not have one.
St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver today launched a newborn drop-off facility called Angel’s Cradle that will provide a place for mothers to abandon their babies anonymously and safely.
The door to the Angel's Cradle, set in a private alcove near the hospital's emergency entrance, is set up to automatically trigger an alarm 30 seconds after a baby is placed inside.
On Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2010, at approximately 1:20 p.m., a citizen discovered a crying newborn baby in a garbage bin in the 500 block of 40 Ave. N.W., Calgary.
District 3 units immediately arrived and EMS transported the male infant to hospital, where he is currently in stable condition.
The identity of the parents has not been confirmed.
One hour after the baby was discovered, a woman was transported to hospital by EMS, from the same area. Investigators are currently not able to confirm whether this incident is related to the discovery of the child.
The Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit is investigating, with the support of District 3 investigators.
The investigation is ongoing and no further details are available at this time. A release will be sent out when updates are available, as early as tomorrow.
