This has actually been driving me crazy!. This is Wendy's brilliant attempt to drive revenue.
It use to be:
Step 1, give me a combo 4 with coke.
Step 2: pay 7.34
enjoy
Now it's:
Step 1: I'll have a combo 4
Step 2: Do you want that Medium or Large? (note the lack of offering small)
Step 3 (before I learn the scam) Medium
Step 4: Single, Double or Triple? Uh, just regular please
Step 5: Extra charge for the Medium upsell
Step 6: Pay new higher charge, get a bunch of extra fries and drink you didn't want
Now I have no problem with the upsell, but don't trick me into it. Medium is what has always come with combo, so when I ask for medium ( I want the regular). Tell me small is the new medium ahead of time. Of course I caught on and now it's back to normal, with a bunch more questions to answer...

They changed months ago. I didn't realize this until a few orders of getting a massive medium.
Finally on my 3rd/4th time going I just said the small one and it was back to the "regular medium".
Wendy's has good food, but f*** their shrewd business tactics, completely unethical BS.

i'll never forget when a buddy and i did a roadtrip to Seattle for a concert. we stopped at Jack in the Box for food after, and i knew what to expect from US fast food so i ordered the small. buddy is used to ordering the large everywhere in Canada, so does the same here. my order was what we would consider large, but his was gargantuan. the fries were in a big rectangular box, not a cup, and his coke was about the size of a double gulp from 7-11. he couldn't believe it when they were handing him his massive bag 'o food at the drive thru
