Default Exciting News IP Criminals: Blu-Ray has been Cracked

From PC Mag:

Quote:
The leaked HDCP master key protecting millions of Blu-ray discs and devices that was posted to the Web this week has been confirmed as legitimate, Intel representatives said late Thursday.

The disclosure means, in effect, that all Blu-ray discs can now be unlocked and copied.
Now I've never been tempted to download a Blu-ray movie for a number of reasons, but my sense was they were out there if you wanted.

Can one of our tech gurus fill us in on how big this really is?

It’s not as big a deal as its made out to be. It’s always been possible to circumvent BluRay copy protection, although up until now its been a game of chess between the crackers and the content producers, who are capable of issuing key revocations to slow, but not eliminate the work of the crackers.

With the master private keys out in the wild, however, crackers will be able to issue their own software and device decryption keys which appear, for all intents and purposes, to be legitimate, thus rendering the key revocation process useless (since the crackers can create as many new, legitimate keys as they want now).

For the BluRay rip aficionado, there will be no discernible difference - the software has been commercially available for a long time now (ie. SlySoft AnyDVD HD), other than not having to wait as long for the apps to be updated to support the latest BluRay releases.

the only thing Blu Ray has on piracy is sheer size and cost of media dissuades many average people from downloading actual full BR rips.

HDCP doesn't have much to do with Blu ray, really. This is more used to transfer all protected content via hdmi. It will probably put the brakes on plans to release on-demand movies at high prices while still in theaters.

I was going to mention this. I'm not sure the companies have a ton to worry about with bluray piracy. Sure it's not something that's welcome, but it's nowhere near as simple as pirating something like a tv show or an album. You need a serious time and money investment to get the rips and then store them.

Blu-Ray Rips and Ripping a Blu-Ray are 2 different things in my mind.

When i think of a blu-ray rip - i think of a MKV HD rip.
When I think of a ripping a blu-ray disc, i think 30 gigs+ of data
