Default France bans the burqa

The French senate approved Tuesday a law banning any veils that cover the face -- including the burqa, the full-body covering worn by some Muslim women -- making France the first European country to plan such a measure.
Good. I hope canada follows and starts the ban of ceremonial swords and other stupid religious items...

As much as I agree with this, the solution that the men who own their women will come up with will be to simply imprison the women in the home.

I don't get why this is good. Let Muslims be Muslims, I really don't care about any of this religious crap anymore. It is all non-sense, let them do what they want.

I would be more than happy if France outlawed every public display of religious observance.

Religion is like sex. Keep that bizarre in your house you freaks.

Are they talking about only the face-covering, or even the one that just goes on your head? If it's the latter, that seems pretty extreme. That's going to get real messy.

It is possible for a Muslim to consider France his own country.

Problem is, when we let "Muslims be Muslim" we aren't giving Muslim women a chance to even be people! I am of the opinion that in progressive democratic societies (such as France, Canada, etc.) we have a responsibility to stand up for all of our citizens, despite what "god" they may pray to.

These people want to be "Muslim" and degradate the rights of 50% of society? No problem, they can head back to Afghanistan or whatever 3rd world hell hole they crawled out of anytime they'd like.

Good on the French, hopefully the rest of the western world will follow and we can stop cowtowing to the discriminatory ways of (a large portion of) the Muslim people.

Really surprising that only one senate member voted against this.

To tell you the truth this really is overbreadth. I agree that there has to be limits on when face coverings can be worn, but a total ban was not necessary. Also, not entirely comfortable with this:

"The law imposes a fine of 150 euros ($190) and/or a citizenship course as punishment for wearing a face-covering veil"

Combined with the recent mass expulsion of Romas, I'm not entirely sure I like where France is headed:

I love the citzenship course idea. Problem is it should be the offenders husband who has to attend the course, not the offender. Clearly these people need a course to help them understand why the Birka is being banned and to educate them on basic human rights and freedoms.

I dont mind if people wear it, I just dont like it when they think its their right to wear it in a place that requires them see your face. Religious freedoms no matter the religion should not over-ride laws/rules in public places.
