Mafia II demo
Noticed today that a demo is out for Mafia II on the PS3, was wondering if anyone has tried it yet. I’ve had it on pre-order FOREVER, so I’m downloading the demo now to see if its going to be decent, or if the extended development cycle has hurt it.

I enjoyed what little there was to it. I don't recall ever playing the original Mafia

I'd get it on PC honestly. The demo has barely been out a little over a week and the modding scene is already going full tilt on it and has picked it apart completely. The full game is out in a few days. People are also complaining of screen tearing and low FPS on consoles. Also, there's of course no PhysX on the console versions either which affects the physics of objects, explosions, debris, clothes, etc.
You can download the demo via Steam.

The PS3 version of Mafia 2 is very inferior to the other releases because it is a bad port by a Vancouver company. It has much more quincunx blur filter applied to it, has no multi-sample antialising, and is missing a ton of alpha sprites and features like grass!

I downloaded it the first day it came out. I'm getting the PS3 version due to the exclusive and free DLC. I tried it on the PC and I just didn't like the controls compared to the console version. I've noticed I'm becoming less of a graphics whore. The only really graphical difference I found between the 360 version and the PS3 version that stood out is the grass and that's very minor.

Have tried it for the 360.
I was expecting this game to be way more refined. It was a must buy before the demo, but now I'm not so sure. The cut-scenes suffer badly, very choppy. Also sounds like the voice actors whispered into the mic. Speaking of voice actors, there isn't one recognizable voice. It's almost expected in the Mafia entertainment genre to recycle the same actors. I was at least expecting Vincent Pastore to have a role somewhere. The soundtrack may save this game.
Gonna rent first.

Just finished the demo(ps3) and not too impressive...nothing here that has not been done in any GTA better...I'll reserve judgement until I see some final reviews

I downloaded and went through the demo on PC today. Looks to be EPIC. Graphics look superb on PC.
Note: For ATI chipset users, dont put on the PhysX Nvida stuff. Your frame rate will just drop right off.
Can't wait to buy it on tuesday!
I wish PC gaming would come back to the forefront. The latest COD and Force Unleashed half assed ports really put a sour taste in my mouth.

Tried it both for the 360 and PS3. I really liked the game, especially the in-game cut scenes. The way the eyes move on the characters is very convincing. I didn't notice any issues with regard to voice acting like on poster was stating. Not sure if it matters but I was running the audio via HDMI.
One thing I noticed, that others pointed out already, is that the 360 and PS3 suffer a fair amount of graphical issues. The PS3 version, in my opinion, is horrible in the graphics department. The 360 is good but still has some slow down, tearing, etc. Hopefully some stuff has been ironed out. I'll most likely wait for the reviews.

You can plug in an Xbox 360 controller into your PC.

Go into the Mafia 2/edit/apex folder
Make a backup.
Now anything that you delete will take that specific PhysX feature out out of the game. IE: delete the cloth folder and the clothing effects are gone but the rest are still in. Delete all the cloth files aside from the ones that say VIT and the xml and ms files and Vito's clothes get PhysX but others don't.
PhysX is a gimmick because a lot more of the phyics load can be put on the CPU but Nvidia gives developers bags of money to require dedicated hardware.
If you leave most of the PhysX in but simply remove the features from the clothes of all the civilians and bystanders and NPCs, the framerate is decent.

It won't really work with where I have my TV and computer. Plus I don't have a PhysX card or a 3D TV so I wouldn't be able to take advantage of the PC version perks anyway.

I have tried countless times to plug my Xbox 360 controller into my comp and it has never worked.
Info on such wonderment would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Hold on. Google may be my friend here......
EDIT2: Nope. Doesn't work. Downloaded the software, restarted. Nothing.
EDIT3: Turns out you have to spend money. Big surprise. Why not just buy the controller specifically designed for the computer if you have to buy the wireless kit for it anyway?

My experience with this is that once paired with a PC, the PS3 controller needs to be connected by cable to the PS3 to re-pair with the PC before it’ll work on the console again. Small inconvenience if you switch between the two platforms, but worth noting so you aren’t scratching your head as to why it stopped working with the console. I forget every time I do this

I'm fine with the game having average game play if the story is amazing. It seems like the review mainly focused on the game play and the fact the city wasn't as open world as the reviewer liked.
