Some Info on Joining an MMA Gym
Hi everyone, I've got a friend who's interested in joining a MMA gym (which offers training with membership) and he's gotten some info from some friends that do it, but he's hoping to get a broader range of opinions besides theirs (and just google search). So I bring this question to all knowing CP. Anyone ever done it, and if you have, what do you like and dislike about it? If you aren't doing it anymore, why not? Thanks in advance.

I suggest taking kick boxing or muay thai if you want something fast pace. My friend takes MMA lessons in Vancouver and says there is more of wresting and Ju jitsu more than stand up striking.

Is MMA getting popular, i.e. people picking it up more these days?

This. Unless your friend likse groping other men or having other men's legs wrapped around his head on the ground all day. Stand up striking is where it's at.

The hardest part if learning MMA?
Telling your dad you're gay.

do your research and don't be afraid to ask a few tough questions.
MMA gyms are notorious for being full of:
a) gangs
b) wanna be gangs
c) guys who want to beat people up without getting charged and will take a cheap shot at you if given the chance.
A good MMA gym will not tolerate any of that crap. They are out there, but you really have to hunt around. You need an instructor who knows all the moves, but isn't going to show you the next move until you have competently learned the first one. It isn't supposed to be about the instructor showing off.

Killer, where do you get the gang link to MMA from? I have not heard of that in Calgary before.

I'd recommend BDB as well if they live in the North. There's a few new gyms opening up around town, Independent MMA is pretty close to Chinook Centre if they live around that area, BullyBreed MMA is also in the South if I remember correctly.
If MMA isn't a strict requirement I recommend Mike Miles Muay Thai, it's one of the better Muay Thai gyms in Canada let alone Calgary.

can't say.
Just do the research and ask questions about the coaching. There are lots of good ones in Alberta.

I think the gang thing is what I would be worried about the most. It's not exactly a secret that a lot of the people involved in MMA are lowlife criminals. It's like the new generation of boxing clubs.

I know you were trying to be witty, but you're just coming across as ignorant. seriously, if you see two people trying to break each other's limbs and choke each other out as gay... well that's your issue to deal with.

A well rounded mixed martial artist will have both stand up striking skills, and a good ground base as well. Wrestling is essential to control where you want the fight to happen as well IMO.

Hahaha. Wow.. There is absolutely no evidence of that whatsoever.
I went to BDB a few times before my schedule got too hectic, and it was great. Everyone was very nice, and there were absolutely no issues aside from me being out of shape.
There are lowlife criminals involved in lots of things.
It's not exactly a secret that a lot of people involved in ________ are lowlife criminals.
Fill that blank with : Motorcycles, skateboarding, pool, beer league hockey, night clubs, knitting...
Such a silly statement.

Yeah, because showering with the guys in the locker room after a hockey game is very straight. Stupid.
