Does Kris Chucko get another contract?
Coming off 28 goals and 51 points in the AHL, he signed a one year deal last summer. Then he had an injury plagued season that saw him drop down to 9g and 18p in 41 games this year.
He's an RFA again, does Sutter sign him again?
Would suck to cut loose our first round pick from 2004, or is cutting him loose even an option that should be considered?

Personally he wasn't stellar in 07-08 year either. Once Greentree and Lundmark came to the qc he did his floating and coming into the zone late and hammering home the rebounds that Greentree or Lundmark didn't get.
I thought that his big year was due to who he was playing with not how much better he got.
Cut him loose and just get it over with.
He will be a career AHLer.

He's not a bad player. He is capable of being a hard nosed grinder. The thing is, he takes dumb penalties and has very limited capabilities for scoring. There's room in Abbotsford for him next year. Past that though, more prospects will be looking to jump into the AHL and I think Chucko will be shown the door based on the fact that he's had multiple (What, 4?) chances and probably won't get much better than he is right now.
So probably another 1 year contract.
As for his future, I think last season is really telling. No better numbers or play than before. I used to think he'd be a decent bottom 6 player with 5-10 goals/year. He really isn't progressing though, so I think he'll realistically end as a bottom 3/13th forward.

ultimately, i would guess, that the prospect of signing him is dependent on whether there are other players that have more perceived "upside"....
unless calgary finds its own ville leino, I don't see the harm in offering him another 1 year contract so that he can overcome the injury problems he suffered this year.
IMO, though it isn't shared by many others, minor league players have a window that typically expires by 24: if you haven't played in the Bigs by that age, chances are you never will (the caveat being a european player that need more time to adjust to the NA game).
a one year contract for Chucko is in some ways, due diligence on the part of the organization - Chucko's step back might be a function of his injuries...or it might be a limited upside or lack or a center that feeds him the puck....the window isn't closed for him, but with one more year, you would think that the organization's talent evaluators would have a 'fair' metric from which they can make that decision.

People will probably point to Nystrom as an example of a guy becoming an NHL player when everyone thought he was a bust, but honestly if Chucko's greatest potential is career 4th line grinder, I say cut him loose or trade him for a handful of magic beans.
If he were going to step up and make enough of an impact to become a member of the team he probably would've done it by now. Yeah it sucks that it's another 1st round bust to add to the list but really, I try not to think about our drafting pre-2007. It's just too depressing.

Nystrom always seemed to have more future and depth though. Chucko always seemed to be brawn that was kind of slow and a player that should have been picked in the old NHL. Sutter was still locked into the wrong mindset at this point about the game.
That was a horrible first round pick.

meh, don't care either way. If another team is willing to take a chance on him, make him part of a package, or get a 6th rounder out of it...

With all the junior players getting signed and likely to start for the Heat next year makes me think that Chucko's time is about up.

Considering the bad concussion I think they float a final contract his way.

If they sign him, I'm guessing it'll be as "veteran presence" on the farm. Lots of kids making the leap this year.

I doubt Chucko would even make it in the old NHL.
The guy is a bust... time to move on and give some new blood a shot.

About what I figured, most have run out of patience with Chucko....and understandably so.
Myself, I give him another one year deal and see if all the new young players that will be surrounding him, gives him a shot in the arm.

I would sign him for sure, worst case he is an experienced forward for the Abbotsford Heat.

Sure, but I think it's a question of the pro contract limit in the organization... Is there someone else the team would rather give a contract to?

There are many other older players who play for the Heat. To make that statement a person would have to evaulate all of the players.

Flames have just 40 players under contract or RFAs, including 19 on the big club (incl. Sutter, Backlund and Kronwall), so plenty of room under the 50 contract limit to sign Chucko

I wouldn't be rushing to sign him at this point in time. He's 24 years old now so if you can find a Grant Stevenson, Carsen Germyn, or Jason Jaffrey type of AHL scorer who can be NHL depth for you, I'd go with that type of player over Chucko. He's had 4 years, and at this point he hasn't proven that he can be more than an absolute fringe NHL player.

Had an idea!

I don't think its fair to not give him another chance. The injuries he struggling with were in a sense 'freak' injuries, so he could have a bounce back year.
