Default Matt Pelech Article

http://www.bclocalnews.com/sports/93895834.html

Gets some praise from Playfair:

Quote:
“It’s obviously tough,” said Pelech of the prospect of playing regularly for the Flames. “They have arguably one of the best defence corps in the NHL. For somebody like me that’s still young and developing, it’s really hard to crack. But I just think that as long as I’m getting better every day, every month, every year, that I’m getting towards playing there. Whether I’m here next year, or whether I’m there, as long as I’m getting better and making progress, that’s the goal.”

Heat head coach Jim Playfair felt Pelech’s late-season return was important for the team, based on his physical style of play.

“Let’s be honest – we were scared for Matt,” Playfair said, referring to the blood clot issue. “With his ability to come back and be an impact player, I think Matt is going to make a heavy push for a job (with the Calgary Flames) next year.

“He’s a physical player, and hard player to play against, and that had been lacking in our group.”

Things like this make me hate the Staios trade even more.

I really hope Pelech makes the team and Staios gets eaten by wolves or something.

Pretty interesting that Pelech is also the nephew of Mike Gillis. I didn't know that.

Ugh...

Just get rid of one of Sarich or Staios and put this kid in the line up already...

I don't know what team you watched, but there is no way Staios was the 3rd best defender. He was 5th, on some nights 6th (if Sarich had a good game).

Staois was and is garbage. He was on the ice for something like every even strength goal against down the stretch for the Flames.

3rd best defender? What are you smoking?

Flames just got rid of Warrener and not stuck with Edmonton's version in Staois. Was a gritty guy 5-7 years ago...cant cut it today.

IMO, Pelech will be on the big team next year...one way or another.

Regehr ~= Sarich ~= Staios

I expect 1-2 of the above gone by fall. Ideally, top 6 of:

bouwmeester - giordano
regehr - white
Staios - pelech

I like our defence but they're too expensive and Pelech sounds like he's ready, so someone has to go even if it's Pardy. If we have any injuries, we have other young guys on the farm such as Negrin or Seabrooke and Kronwall is still under contract, we can call up.

Yup.

IMO, I would like to see the following (all wishful).

Regher to Washington - Capitals need a big time veteran defensive blueliner. Would be nice to somehow get them to take Kotalik off our hands too. Big body winger. Regehr and Kotalik for Fehr and Alzner.

Sarich to Buffalo. Sarich has a history with Buffalo and the Flames have a history of dealing D to Buffalo. Buffalo needs to get bigger and grittier down the middle. Langkow, Sarich and Moss for Conolly (1 year till UFA) and Stafford.

Staois to Islanders as they like their Witt style D. Give me future considerations - ie nothing.

Not quite "Yup". I mostly like our defence but you want to ship half of them out, never happen.

It seems like everybody wants to get on the bandwagon of shipping out players A, B, C, D, E, and F, the GM, the coach, and the scouting staff because we missed the playoffs.

And people say Sutter panicked?

I wish it was that easy to get rid of our garb.

Whats surprising is that somehow it always seems to get done.

Last year Primeau and Vandermeer were both traded when no one thought it was possible.

I think it's an over-statement to say these guys are garbage. While I do question how easy it would be to move Staios - there are a lot of teams that would love to have Regehr, and I suspect many could also use Sarich.

Heres how it goes down...Staios was brought in for the playoff push (failed) then to be a PK shutdown guy next year. Sarich will be traded, despite being the better player, as his final year of his deal overlaps with Giordano being extended. Pelech replaces Sarich. Factor in too, Regehr gets a partner he can play with by trading out Phaneuf. Pelech would have likely just been called up and no trade made if he was fit at the time.

Regehr - White
Bouwmeester - Staios
Giordano - Pelech
Pardy as a spare (or trade add in)

Flames have 3 Left and 3 Right sided D-men, 3 shutdown guys and 3 puckmovers (one of each on each pair).

Sarich can net a pick in the upcoming draft, a late 1st if the flames add something to the deal, or a second.

Staios deal IMO has nothing to do with blocking out Pelech and everything to do with freeing up cap room in D for Giordano's UFA year

Not sure about you, but i actually hated that D pairing, it made Bouwmeester's stats drop like crazy.

give them a training camp/preseason/a few more games together...You could always get rid of both Sarich and Staios and get a right-sided D with more of a rounded game, but that may be wishful thinking

bouwmeester - giordano
regehr - white
Staios - pelech

i still like gio + bouwmeester as our top pairing playing ~25 mins, regher/white for another 20, and then staios/pelech ~15.

Right shooting defencemen are at a premium and you don't put two of them together.

Also since Staios and Sarich shoot right, their trade value goes up also.
